News from the President

Dear Friends,

I am very pleased to share this newsletter with you because there is plenty of great news about the Alliance for Health and Rehabilitation (AHR).

Alex’s election and our ongoing relationship with the Club de Rotario de Meridana (Womens Rotary Club in Merida) are indications that the support needed for sustainability is growing. In December 2022, he completed his doctoral degree and will continue to contribute to the advancement of rehabilitation education in Yucatan through his work at Universidad Aútonoma de Yúcatan.

Our good news also includes a successful online Giving Tuesday Campaign, a number of new trip participants and an exciting fundraising effort in Yucatan. I hope for more positive news throughout 2023 as we celebrate our fifth anniversary.

Thank you for all that you do to support AHR.

In friendship,

Dale Deubler, PT, MS

Board of Trustees, President

Trip Update

The participants and leaders for both of the 2023 trips have been preparing to to Merida in March and to Tizimin in June. After making modifications in our schedules in Tizimin last year because of the pandemic, this year we will use the plan that was used prior to the pandemic. In Merida, we will expand the number of schools we visit from two to four. Nearly half of the therapists will be 'first-timers.'

We welcome Alison Carlozza, PT, Krysten Chadwick, OT, Megan DeMott, OT, Lisa Riolo, PT, and Jill Tonneman, PT.

Thank you for your gifts!

We are very grateful to all the contributors to our November Giving Tuesday Campaign. We received $2,400! The campaign included sharing information about AHR and patient stories in social media, a series of emails and a few creative activities by some AHR Board members. A special thanks to Julie Conry, Nancy Velasquez and Devon Nyktas for their work on making this event a success.

The donations will be used to help fund the cost of the interpreters who work with the groups in Tizimin and Merida. The work would not be possible without the help from these local bilingual residents. In addition to interpreting, they provide much needed insight into the culture and willingly share their knowledge of the communities where we work.

Raffle Held to Support Our Mission

During February, a raffle benefiting AHR was held. Annette Walliser and her family led every aspect of this event. This is the first AHR fund raising event held in Yucatan. Her aunt donated the painting and other family members sold many tickets and helped with the logistics of running the event while Annette was in Ohio. Thank you to everyone who helped this be a huge success.

The raffle increased awareness of AHR and raised funds to help cover the cost of interpreters.who work with the trip therapists in the clinics and schools in Yucatan.
