March Is Women's History Month
 

In February 2020, the Lozano Long Conference "Black Women's Intellectual Contributions to the Americas" was held on campus at LLILAS Benson. Read an interview with the conference's two distinguished keynote speakers, Sueli Carneiro and Rosana Paulino. Paulino's art is featured in Social Fabric: Art and Activism in Contemporary Brazil, at the VAC, which closes March 10.

LLILAS Benson Remembers Friend and Alumnus David Wells

LLILAS Benson is saddened to announce the death of friend and LLILAS Benson Advisory Council member David Wells in February. Wells earned his master's in Latin American Studies here in 1997. He is remembered for his kind heart, sharp mind, and talent in the field of communication. Read the tribute here.

Screening—Mexico through the Lens of Women Filmmakers: El lado salvaje (The Wild Side)

This is the second in a film series organized by Latino Media Studies, of which LLILAS is a co-sponsor. This 75-minute documentary by Mariana Paredes Peláez tells the story of Ernestina Ramírez, and 82-year-old Track and Field World Champion. More details here

LLILAS Welcomes New Affiliates


C. Ondine Chavoya

Dr. C. Ondine Chavoya was appointed John D. Murchison Regents Professor in Art in the Department of Art and Art History in 2023. His research interests include Latinx art, Chicanx Art, Queer Latinx and Latin American Art,  curatorial practice and museum studies, Pop Art in the Americas.








Januibe Tejera de Miranda

French-Brazilian artist Januibe Tejera has been named Assistant Professor of Composition and Director of the UT Electronic Music Studio. His work connects contemporary music with oral music traditions, new technology, and theatrical elements, all with an eye toward music as a multi-sensory experience.

Alumnus Christopher Loperena Publishes New Book

Christopher A. Loperena (MA, Latin American Studies) has published the book The Ends of Paradise: Race, Extraction, and the Struggle for Black Life in Honduras (Stanford). Dr. Loperena is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.  
 




 
 
  

Alumna Profile: Melissa Macaya

Melissa Macaya is a three-time Emmy-nominated multimedia journalist. She currently serves as a Senior Live News Editor at CNN Digital, where she directs, executes, and oversees live multimedia coverage of political breaking news. She received a BA in Latin American Studies from UT Austin and an MA in Journalism from Georgetown University.





 

ConTex Fellow Mercedes Alejandra Payán Ramírez Interviewed

Mercedes Alejandra Payán Ramírez of Chihuahua, CI, Mexico, is a doctoral student of ethnomusicology at the UT Butler School of Music and a ConTex doctoral fellow. She is interviewed in February's issue of ConTex Conversations, which focuses on the binational research of fellows in the program. Read the interview.
