NEWS AND UPDATES

I’m a PLD attested facilitator!

My PLD facilitator attestation has just been approved. Yay! That means regionally allocated PLD funding is available if your school/cluster/Kāhi Ako wants to work with me to improve reading and writing outcomes for ākonga.

This would mean the design of bespoke PLD for your teachers that fits with your local curriculum and your whānau aspirations. It would leverage my knowledge and expertise as we design a common practice approach and rich shared understandings and kaiako knowledge about literacy learning in your context.

I have teamed up with the inspiring Del Costello from Coactive Education. Del can help interested schools with the process and explain what it is all about. Contact Del to learn more.

Fostering lifelong readers

I have been reflecting on my teacher training. One of the best things I received from it was the importance of fostering a love of reading and creating lifelong readers. Ways we do this include:
  • reading to children many times during the day
  • finding texts that appeal to their interests
  • having comfortable social places for tamariki to browse their reading boxes and class library books
  • organising reading events such as book character days and readathons
  • using the school and public libraries
  • making books
  • listening to and creating audiobooks
… and so on.

Most importantly, we create countless opportunities to talk, talk, talk about reading and stories. It’s easy to forget sometimes in our focus on teaching the mechanics of reading, that fostering a love of reading is the goal. We want children to love reading and to become lifelong readers.

Cyclone Gabrielle

I have been thinking about teachers and tamariki affected by the cyclone. Living through the earthquakes in Christchurch, I am well aware of the long-term impact of such catastrophic events while the rest of the country has moved on. I know many will be going through a hard time picking up the pieces in the aftermath of the cyclone. Teachers will be supporting tamariki through the trauma, creating that stability and routine so needed by them, whilst they are also going through the trauma themselves. It’s not easy.

Latest Early Literacy Clinic Q&A

I ran an Early Literacy Clinic at the start of this term. I started with a brief talk about how to teach writing to children who can’t write yet (video coming soon) and then we had a Q&A which you can watch on my website or Youtube.

Teachers sent in questions including asking about sending reading books home, quick ways to assess phonic stages, new resources, the place of phonics in Reading Recovery, how often to use decodable readers and more. The response to the clinic was overwhelmingly positive and we will be running another one next term. You're invited to join of course. All are welcome to attend.

Yo's Brown Rice and Edamame Bean Salad with Miso Dressing

I’ve tweaked Nicola Galloway’s original recipe that I cut from the newspaper last year. I made it a gazillion times over the summer. It’s a great way to enjoy brown rice and perfect for school lunch too! Miso is a fermented soy bean paste. You can find it in all supermarkets or Asian groceries.

1) In a large saucepan, bring the water and salt to boil.

2) In a sieve or fine colander, rinse rice under cold water to remove any excess starch before adding to the boiling water. Reduce the temperature as necessary to prevent the water overflowing, but maintain a steady boil.

3) Boil for 30 minutes, uncovered, before draining any remaining water and return the rice to the pot. Cover the pot and let the rice rest, off the heat, for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork to separate the grains. Transfer to a shallow salad bowl to cool.

4) Rinse pot before adding a further 3 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to boil.

5) Par-boil the edamame beans and corn kernels for 5 minutes then drain and plunge into cold water. Allow to well drain before adding to the rice.

6) To make the dressing, whisk together all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Taste and adjust the flavour with an extra teaspoon of lime/lemon juice and/or sweetener as needed.

7) Add the remaining ingredients to the salad bowl, spoon over the dressing and mix well to combine.

6 C water
Pinch of salt
¾ C (150g) brown rice (medium or long-grain)
1½ cups (250g) frozen podded edamame beans (or green peas)
1 C frozen corn kernels
1 red capsicum, diced
2 spring onions, thinly sliced
3 tbsp sunflower seeds, toasted
3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, toasted

Miso dressing
1 tbsp miso paste
1 tsp soy sauce/tamari
1 tbsp lime/lemon juice
2 tsp toasted sesame oil
1 tsp brown sugar or maple syrup
2cm piece of fresh ginger, finely grated

Prep: 20 mins
Cook: 20-25 mins
Serves: 2-4
