  • "Postcards from the Past" during Coffee Conversations on Tuesday, Feb 28th, 3:15-4:15 in the SS Commons
    • The Keweenaw Time Traveler Team would like to invite you to a ‘Postcards from the Past Event’  
    • Have fun exploring the Time Traveler’s digital maps and historical records, then fill out postcards to share that info with current residents of specific local houses.
    • No experience necessary! Fill out 1 or 10 – stay as long as you want!
    • The Keweenaw Time Traveler team is made up of scholars from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds whose mission is to start conversations - both online and through in-person programming - about how the Copper Country’s industrial past continues to affect our lives and identities today using maps and historical records.

  • Congratulations to Caitlyn Sutherlin (Ph.D. EEP program) who has been awarded a $5,000 Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) Graduate Fellowship for summer research in El Salvador.  Her project proposal is titled, “UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS WITH NATURE IN CALIFORNIA, EL SALVADOR.” Co-PIs are Dr. Kari Henquinet, Dr. Angie Carter, and Dr. Luke Bowman.
  • IHA Student Emma Wuepper’s Textile Conservation Work is on Exhibit
    • Stop by the Rozsa Center lobby to see an interpretive installation of historic vaudeville theatre costumes, part of a project that Industrial Heritage and Archaeology PhD candidate Emma Wuepper worked on with Visual and Performing Arts Department faculty member Mary Cyr.
    • These hand-sewn and embellished costumes were donated to Michigan Tech by Judi Duncan Yantiss of Chicago, whose family wore them while performing in the early 20th century.
    • This project, in which Emma researched and carried out professional-quality clothing conservation treatments, is informing Emma’s dissertation research about the role of historic costume collecting in affective and embodied heritage practice.

  • The Centre for Grand Strategy at King’s College London Climate Change and International Order Essay Prize 2022
    • Hugh S. Gorman, Professor Emeritus of Environmental History and Policy, Michigan Technological University, was selected as the overall winner for his essay International Order and Governance in the Anthropocene.
  • Congrats to Dr. Shan Zhou for her recently proposal to the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "SYN&GO: Synergistic Milestones of Flexible and Networked Power Infrastructure with Collaborative Governance in a Hurricane-Prone Area."

Undergrad:
  • Urgent Apply for this Archeological Technician Position Now
    • The positions will close after the first 50 applicants or by March 6th, 2023, at the latest.
    • Isle Royale National Park will hire two archaeological technicians for this summer season.
    • One position is funded by the Abandoned Mines Program and will survey mining landscapes and help design mine shaft mitigation.
    • The other person will also help with those tasks, but also perform other duties related to separate 106 and 110 survey obligations.

  • Office of Indian Energy Program Analyst
    • This position will provide programmatic planning and logistic support requiring attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks for the Office of Indian Energy.
    • This a fully remote full-time position based out of Golden, CO.
    • The Office of Indian Energy supports Indian tribes and Native communities in their goals to lower energy costs, increase energy security and resilience, and get electric power to unelectrified buildings through clean energy technologies.  
Grad Positions:
  • FREE Heritage Risk & Resiliency Documentation Program in Puerto Rico this June
    • This certificate program will teach new techniques to survey, document and map cultural heritage sites in, and around, historic San Juan and Cataño, Puerto Rico.
    • Expert instructors will guide 15 participants as they complete hands-on training with the documentation technology.
    • The team will gather data that is instrumental to the work PRSHPO is doing to plan and mitigate for the increased effects climate change is having on the island. 
    • Participants will be emerging professionals, federal and state employees, and other professionals interested in advancing their knowledge of digital documentation for climate change mitigation.

  • State Program Administrator Principal
    • This position:
      • provides professional policy analysis and policy related information services to the Minnesota Forest Research Council
      • has lead statewide responsibility for developing and implementing Minnesota Forest Research Council forest policy initiatives. 
      • manages a variety of policy related communications and stakeholder outreach initiatives
      • manages the policy information functions and assists as necessary with administrative tasks and functions.
    • The work location is at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.
