News from Washington Latin

Anna Julia Cooper Campus

Dear Cooper Families,

As we approach the end of Black History month, I want to share with you all how we work to consistently taken the time - not just in February-- to bring to the forefront those parts of American and world history that are becoming more and more overlooked or overshadowed in schools. Our teachers have been working to highlight all members of our past who have had an impact on the world in which we now live, regardless of their race or ethnicity but including those figures who, because of just those characteristics, may have been hidden in history. While engaging our students in challenging conversations around topics such as racial identity and discrimination, we aim to provide our students with a safe space to share their perceptions and ideas, to hear and learn from you and their peers, and to be comfortable enough to be confidently flexible in their thinking.

Part of what makes our school a special one, is our openness to these kinds of dialogues and topics year-round. February will end, but our commitment to seeking these conversations and exploring all enduring ideas - regardless of their initiators-- will continue in our work with your children.

Sincerely,

Khashiffa Roberts

Classical Reading Group for Parents

 February 27
6:45 - 8:00 pm

Diana E. Smith Library
2nd St Campus

Join the next session of the parent classical reading group, led by Diana Smith with other members of our faculty.

Ever wish you could jump into a class and discuss the enduring ideas of the Latin Way and our classical education? Here's your chance! Join our first Classical Reading Group of this year to discuss a work of ancient literature: Sophocles' Oedipus the King with members of the Latin faculty and your fellow parents. Known usually as the play about the man who marries his mother and kills his father, this play is far more than this popular synopsis. It introduces several enduring ideas:  How free are we? What does it take to pursue the truth? What are we blind to?

This is the third session on the play; we will read the play aloud and then discuss as we go. There is no need to have read the play beforehand!

If you want to get started anyway, please be sure to find a copy of Robert Bagg's translation (pictured above and available on Amazon and other booksellers (ISBN # 9780062132086), Please try to get that one, if possible. We will have copies available that evening, as well.

Please visit The Latin Way page to RSVP for this next reading group at the Cooper Campus. You can also view the recording of the first three virtual discussions, see the full calendar of discussions this year, and RSVP for our next virtual discussion on March 9.

REMINDER: Clothes Matter!

Please remember these basics of our uniform policy, including PE!

The Uniform

Thanks to our students who arrive in uniform everyday. The basics of the Latin uniform include: collared shirt with logo, Latin sweatshirt or fleece (over that polo!), and either khaki or navy bottoms.

Reminder that students are expected to change into their PE uniform (gray Latin shirt, cardinal shorts). While students who do not have their PE uniform will still be able to participate in class, this will affect their grade.

Read the full policy on the Policies page .

REMINDER:
Knit, crochet, sew!

New crafting options at Cooper!

Knit & Crochet Circle

This MAGIS class is a place for students to sit and knit or crochet while enjoying the relaxing company of fellow fiber artists.
The Circle meets Thursdays, 3:45 to 4:45 with Ms. Cox. Questions about this option? Please email Ms. Cox (mcox@latinpcs.org).

Reminder: Call for donations - sewing supplies!

Campus will offer sewing as an arts block in the second semester with Ms. Cox. We are asking for donations of sewing tools to enhance the class experience. If you have any of the following supplies (in good shape and working order, of course), please contact Ms. Cox about making a donation.
  • Sewing machines (ideally we would have 3-5)
  • Iron (3 or 4)
  • Ironing boards - full size or table top (3 or 4)
  • Scraps of usable fabric
  • Spools of thread
Thanks you for your donations!

Attendance Matters

Why does attendance matter? Consistent attendance in school plays a vital role in every student’s academic success and contribution to our community. We want all students at school as much as possible, so they can make the most of the educational opportunities offered at Latin.
  • Better academic results (immediately and over the long-term)
  • More positive attitude about school
  • Higher self-confidence
  • Good habits that serve students throughout their education and beyond

What is excused and unexcused? Not all absences are the same. Some can be excused with a parent/guardian note/email, and some require a doctor’s note. Other reasons for an absence or tardiness are NOT excusable, even with a families note.

  • Excused absences include: student illness, medical appointments, serious illness or death in the immediate family, or observance of a religious holiday (please notify us in advance).
  • Unexcused absences are when students are absent from, arrive late to or leave early from school without a valid excuse, whether or not they have parent/guardian approval. Examples include babysitting or other such family obligations, work obligations, oversleeping, and traffic.

How many is "too many" absences or tardies? Chronic absenteeism is the term for a student missing more than 15 days in a school year (both excused and unexcused absences), because this is the point at which we see academic and/or behavioral struggles. Note that when a student misses 20% or more of a school day, it is counted as an absence, so we also watch for students who are chronically tardy.

Please review the full Attendance policy on our Policies page.
