The Charlotte Future 2040 Plan defines our 20-year vision for growth and changes in and around our city. This plan guides how our community builds housing, locates job opportunities and pays for roads, parks and schools citywide.
This is where you come in. Throughout the next year there will be many opportunities -- online and in-person -- to help the city make important decisions about development and growth in your local community. This means improving equity for all through better access to daily amenities and services, housing and employment opportunities, improved access to healthcare and a healthier environment for all.

Program note: Growing our Greenways event postponed
Join us on Friday, Mar. 10 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. as we take a group tour of the Stewart and Irwin Creek greenways in Charlotte.
Learn about how greenways are built and how a complete network would benefit people of all ages and abilities. You will also have a chance to get involved with the efforts of Sustain Charlotte and their Growing our Greenway partners to expand our greenway network. There will also be an opportunity to learn about nature on the walk from the Charlotte Wildlife Stewards.

The future of E-scooters in Charlotte
This week, Sustain Charlotte Urban Design Specialist Eric Zaverl spoke with WCNC for a segment about how E-scooters fit into Charlotte's ambitious mobility and accessibility options. The Strategic Mobility Plan lays out the groundwork with the goal of cutting in half the number of trips made by car over the next 17 years.
“We are going to need to change, and change is hard,” Eric said. “If we’re going to be able to reduce those car trips to 50% were going to need every mode imaginable."

"Meeting my friends on Charlotte's No. 14 bus"
We recommend to you, friends and supporters, this excellent Transit Time/WFAE piece by Bob Page, director of student media at Queens University of Charlotte, where he teaches in the Knight School of Communication. When a collision that totaled his car inspired him to rethink his commute, Bob decided to give the bus a go. What he discovered are benefits we can all appreciate.
"Taking the bus gives me back an hour every day that I can use for whatever I want, and I avoid the stress of driving on overcrowded roads at rush hour," he said. "When I look around the bus and see a dozen fellow commuters, that’s at least 10 fewer cars on the road."
Rock on, Bob. We hope many others will be inspired to rethink their commute, too!

Here's what's on our radar: County budget input, UNCC transportation survey and more!
- March 8: Let’s have fun. Join us for our Sustainability Game Night at Divine Barrel Brewing at 7 p.m. Mingle, learn and flex your board-game skills. Learn more.
- Weigh in on Meck's budget process. Mecklenburg County's budget process for fiscal year 2024 is underway. Residents are invited to attend workshops to learn more about the process and provide input that may factor into county leaders' decisions. Details on budget workshops here. You can also participate in the FY2024 Budget Engagement Survey. This survey is designed to solicit residents' input on the County's multi-billion-dollar annual financial plan. Importantly, this is an opportunity to advocate for the financial resources needed for the County to build 10 miles of greenways per year.
- Share your experiences with transportation in your community. A research team from UNC Charlotte is seeking individuals living in East Charlotte to participate in a 60-minute interview about how they experience transportation in their community. They are especially interested in speaking with people whose primary mode of transportation is transit, cycling, and/or walking, but all East Charlotte residents are welcome to participate (must be 18 years of age or older). Participants will receive a $50 Visa gift card in appreciation of their time. Please consider sharing your stories and perspective to help inform policies affecting Charlotte communities. - Volunteer your time and energy. Sustain Charlotte is a proud beneficiary of this year's Around the Crown 10k. We look forward to supporting and participating in the race. If you, like us, are a fan of Around the Crown, consider volunteering to help make the event a big success!
- Get to know Park and Recreation Councils. Community members are invited to an “All Advisory Council” meeting hosted by Park and Recreation Commissioners on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Southview Recreation Center (1720 Vilma Street, Charlotte, NC 28208). This is an opportunity to get acquainted with various councils that are active, sign up for an advisory council of interest, receive vital information concerning plans and projects within your region. If you’re planning to attend, RSVP to Yvonne.Reed@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov by March 10.
