Ponderings
Ash Wednesday 2023 Clergy Leaders

The ashes are still lingering from last week. We gathered with our sibling Sun City Churches and religious leaders of our respective denominations to confess our corporate and private shortcomings in our community Ash Wednesday service. It marked the beginning of Lent for us.

Lent is a time of self-examination – when we look at ourselves and what we need to hold on to, what we need to let go of, and where we need to turn around and change our direction.

Being a Christian doesn’t mean we have a God who keeps a running tab of our sins; rather, it means that although our shortcomings are many, we have a God who remembers our sin no more. The grace of God is sufficient. Period.

As we gather in this Lenten season, may we come face-to-face with ourselves and do what needs to be done to come alive.

Shalom, Paul

Lent is the best time of the year to run a marathon.
Because that’s when you fast.

I was going to give up lunch meat for Lent… But I just couldn’t quit cold turkey.

I’m giving up negativity for Lent. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I’m giving up spreadsheets for forty days. Excel Lent.

A bartender notices that every evening, without fail, one of his patrons orders three beers. After several weeks of noticing this pattern, the bartender asks the man why he always orders three beers.

The man says, “I have two brothers who have moved away to different countries. We promised each other that we would always order an extra two beers whenever we drank as a way of keeping up the family bond.”

Several weeks later, noticing that the man only ordered two beers, the bartender says, “Please accept my condolences on the death of one of your brothers. You know, the two beers and all…”

The man replies, “You’ll be happy to hear that my two brothers are alive and well. It’s just that I, myself, have decided to give up drinking for Lent.”

Sean Connery’s doctor told him that it wasn’t healthy to keep eating entire eggs, shells and all. “Just give it up for 40 days in the spring, and I bet you’ll feel better.”

The actor took his advice, and returned after 40 days. “How was it?” the doctor asked. Sean Connery smiled. “Eggshell-Lent!”

There should be a season where we remember all the borrowed items we’ve given out that have never been returned. We’ll call it “Lent.”

What does the Pope eat during Lent? Holy mackerel!

I’ve given up picking my belly button for lint.

Lent was invented so that Christians could take another shot at their New Year’s resolutions.
