March Equity and Access training update

We are proud to report that the Houston Health Department (HHD) continues to partner with both the Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI) and the Prevention Institute. The purpose of these partnerships is to organize grassroots groups and individuals located in one or more of HHD's 5 Priority COVID-19 zones to create networks of trained individuals and community groups. To date, nearly 200 individuals have benefited from this training. These trained participants will help assist community residents to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters and public health emergencies, which is intended to minimize the negative impact of inequities that may exist in our communities. Health Equity Employee of the Month
JoAnna McKinney

 Administrative Coordinator for Accounts Payables

JoAnna McKinney's role

My responsibility as administrative coordinator in accounts payables is for the financial and administrative support for the organization. I liaise between Accounts Payables (A/P), program groups, and vendors. I manage the A/P invoice flow, maintain A/P records, and produce A/P reportsI am also in charge of making payments owed by the organization to suppliers and other creditors, paying vendor invoices or bills, disputes, reconciliation, recording the organization's short-term debts, monitoring all accounts payable payments, and ensuring compliance with organization policies.

What Health Equity means to JoAnna McKinney

Health Equity is the attainment of the highest level of health for all people; fair and equitable healthcare leads to more efficient healthcare systems. Health equity values everyone equally with focused and ongoing societal efforts to address avoidable inequalities, historical and contemporary injustices, and social determinants of health - and to eliminate disparities in health and health care. The healthier population requires less medical care, thus improving the quality of life overall.

Vaccine team on the move

On February 17th, the Mobile Vaccine Team along with the Office of Chronic Disease, Health Education and Wellness team were present at Kashmere Gardens MSC Health Fair. The Mobile Vaccine Team administered COVID-19, flu vaccines and pneumonia vaccines. Ten people were vaccinated with the majority being seniors 65+. They all received a free blood pressure monitoring device from the UH representatives upon receiving their vaccines. The Health Education Service Team connected with organizations such as Avenue 360, Change Happens, Disability Rights Texas, and CapTel. They had meaningful conversations and provided on-site education on the benefits of getting vaccinated and staying up to date with their vaccines.

Achieving health equity requires close attention to policies. Within the policy corner, you can access links where you will find policy updates and journal publications related to work being done to advance equity.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
This is a popular adage that describes the longer-lasting effect of teaching someone how to do something rather than to simply giving a hand-out. This is the concept of the Complete Communities Civic Leadership Development (CCCLD) Project spearheaded by Outreach Strategists. The CCCLD project is based on the evidence-based model that residents in communities are uniquely positioned to identify and advocate for changes that will improve the health of their neighborhood. To learn more, click hereClick the orange button to visit their website.
