In Hawaii, we’re lucky to have some of the best weather in the world. But, if you’ve biked at all this month, chances are you’ve had to brave the wind and rain. We’ll still take it over freezing temps and snowstorms any day, but encourage you to review these simple tips to keep you safe when riding in inclement weather.

Lei of Parks Trail

The Deptartment of Parks and Recreation has resumed repaving the Lei of Parks Trail along the makai-side of Paki Avenue. This phase of maintenance work will improve the three-quarter mile stretch of shared path between Monsarrat Ave and Pono Moi Rd. In 2021, work was done on the section bordering the Honolulu Zoo from Kapahulu Ave to Monsarrat Ave. Yay for a smoother, more enjoyable ride!

Great Aloha Run

Last weekend, the Hawaii Pacific Health medic team rode Biki bikes to provide support along the 8-mile course from Aloha Stadium to Aloha Tower. This 39th annual event attracted 12,000 participants! Bikes are an efficient way for first aid responders to quickly access participants in need during crowded public events.

Rapid Response

Earlier this month, a driver veered off South Beretania Street and struck a telephone pole before crashing into one of our stations. Despite the significant damage, our crew took immediate action and got the Biki Stop up and running the same day. We’re very grateful that no riders or bystanders were injured by this reckless driver, who fled the scene before authorities responded.

Unfortunately, this is not the only severe traffic incident this month. We’re devastated by the recent hit-and-run that tragically killed a high school student and injured another while crossing Kapiolani Boulevard. This preventable crime reminds us of the importance of staying alert, protecting vulnerable road users, and advocating for safer streets. In response, HDOT announced plans to install elevated crosswalks, red-light cameras and other safety measures at key intersections on Pensacola and Kapiolani near the crash site.
