START Office

Weekly
February 27, 2023
Edition 150

The START Office was founded by the BUILD PODER program for students who are unable to participate in the BUILD PODER program and would have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and experiences that prepare them for the biomedical workforce.

The purpose of the STEM Transfer and Research Training (START) project is to build a transfer receptive culture, promote research opportunities, and offer information regarding graduate programs in the basic, behavioral and clinical sciences to all transfer students entering CSUN. The START project envisions a community for interdisciplinary collaborations between faculty and students, including students from underrepresented groups, such as African American, Latina/ox, women, individuals with disabilities, and undocumented students, who will contribute to a diverse and prepared workforce in the STEM field.

Even though our resources are tailored to STEM transfer students, the START office and Badge Project is open to all CSUN students.

Who do we consider a “STEM” student?
We consider students in the following colleges a STEM student: College of Social and Behavioral Science, College of Health and Human Development, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and College of Science and Mathematics.

You can make a difference with us!

CSUN’s first ever #CSUNGivingDay begins March 1, when students, families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends join forces for 36 hours of Matador-powered giving for a brighter tomorrow.

Over the last few years, we’ve collaborated with multiple community partners, mentored over 20 interns from different departments, supported our faculty with manuscript and research grant writing, housed over 90 undergraduate and graduate students trained at HERE Center labs, and supported over 650 transfer students.

Scholarship Opportunities

CSUN

NSP Presidential Scholarship

Deadline: March 3, 2023
The NSP Presidential Scholarship affords CSUN undergraduate students the opportunity to work with faculty mentors on significant original work. Students are funded to undertake a research, creative, or applied project that will advance their chosen field of interest and/or contribute to the CSUN community. To be eligible for this award, students must develop their own project, which is independent of their mentor’s current ongoing research – while the project can be tangentially related, it must be the student’s original work.
In addition to the scholarship application materials, there are two pre-application requirements that must be completed. Applicants must review the online pre-application information and complete the required survey to confirm understanding of application requirements. For more information regarding the Presidential Scholarship and to access the workshop, follow this link.
