(This was Friday's letter from Pastor Scott in reference to yesterday's March 5th service.)

The labyrinth will again be open after Church this Sunday, if you wish to walk it as part of your Lenten discipline this year. I mentioned Sunday that we will begin to take a look at the ministry of Jesus for these 40 days with a dual lens: For brevity, I will call them “tradition” and “transition.” Those two words mark both what was happening at the time the gospels were set down in writing, as well as what is happening today. I think we can learn much from the parallelisms.

In Matthews’s community of worship and practice, there seems to have been a persistent effort to be “both/and” Jewish and Christian. Some will argue that Matthew’s community of worship and practice saw themselves as a legitimate “heir” to Jewish traditions. What is interesting when comparing Matthew and John’s accounts side by side are the marked differences between them. The ten years or so between were incredibly impactful for the transition to separate faith traditions.

In both gospels, we have stories told – and interpretations given – about Jesus and communities of the faithful during the chaotic time bridging what we later designate the first and second centuries. It is not too hard to relate to this in our time, both through the eyes of our faith tradition in its contemporary context, as well as the life of 1st Pres.

This Sunday, we will explore the first of John’s stories for Lent – in a carefully playful way. Join us for intergenerational Godly Play; if you bring children/grandchildren, please sit up front so they can see and experience the story more in a very different format than the usual Sunday sermon.

In the Love of Christ,
Pastor Scott

Daily Lenten Devotional Prompts

Each day of the forty days of Lent, we will be posting a word for sacred focus on our Facebook and Instagram pages. These devotional prompts were first co-developed by a Christian Educator colleague of Pastor Scott's, Becky Mosher, and the Associate Pastor at her church, so you'll see their tag line on the bottom right of each image. We hope that they help you engage in spiritual reflection this season. Feel free to respond in the comments section below each focus word if any poignant message speaks to you. May you draw near to God this Lenten season, even as God continually seeks to draw near to you. [Note: You do NOT need to have a Facebook or Instagram account to see our public devotional posts.]
