Editors’ Note

Dear Readers,

In this issue, we spotlight the new pharmabox in Tulane's Lavin-Bernick Center (LBC). The LBC is open 24 hours a day to students and the pharmabox contains emergency contraceptives (EC), pregnancy tests, and several other healthcare products.

We also want to remind you that you can access pregnancy tests and EC for free at Tulane's pharmacy and free pregnancy tests are being stocked by The Well at several locations around campus. Finally, Big Easy EC, Tulane's peer-to-peer EC distribution network, will deliver free EC, pregnancy tests, and other supplies to you when you need them.

Research Grants on Reducing Inequality
"The William T. Grant Foundation is providing grant funding for research to build, test, or increase understanding of programs, policies, or practices to reduce inequality in the academic, social, behavioral, or economic outcomes of young people ages 5-25 in the United States. Research that focuses on reducing inequalities along race, ethnicity, economic standing, language minority status, or immigrant origins will be prioritized."

In this episode, Ben and Khalil talk with Dorothy Roberts – one of the nation’s leading scholars on the child welfare system and reproductive rights – about how the Dobbs decision is expected to have a disproportionate impact on Black women."
Emily Schoenbaum Grant
"The Emily Schoenbaum Grant seeks to encourage and support projects that will benefit the lives of women and girls, particularly those in the New Orleans area. We are particularly interested in organizations doing work around race. Preference may be given to organizations with whom we may develop future internship or service-learning partnerships.

Individuals or nonprofit, IRS tax-exempt organizations in Louisiana are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applications that involve community organizations. Faculty, students, and alumnae are encouraged to apply for work they are doing in the community.

The application cycle is open and applications are due by May 31, 2023."

"The Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom is collecting data on refusals. By collecting this information, we hope to educate and inform the public and be better positioned for ongoing advocacy and support. If you or someone you know has been denied medication by pharmacies or pregnancy-related care from a healthcare professional in connection to the overturning of Roe V. Wade or a state abortion ban or restriction, we'd like to hear about it."
Doing Right at Birth: Apply to Become a Health Professional Champion
"We seek 15 healthcare professionals (including physicians, nurses, and social workers) to grow, spread, and sustain efforts to change reporting policies and provider practices in caring for birthing people who use opioids and other drugs.  To apply:  Please include a 1 page statement of interest and a resume or CV. The 1 page statement should include your reason for wanting to become a health professional champion, what changes you want to make/contribute towards (institutional policies/protocols, state policies, etc.), and any information about institutional barriers or support you anticipate. If you have institutional barriers, explain how support from this group could help people navigate the institutional barriers to change."
Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast Promotora Program
"PPGC is expanding our Promotora program in partnership with Latinx organizations throughout Louisiana. We’re working to train local New Orleanian Latinx leaders using the Promotora created VOICES (Volunteer, Open, Inclusive, Community Education on Sexuality) Program, which was created this year by our Promotora team.  Our sessions are delivered to audiences of 5+ people, virtually or in-person (when it is safe to do so). On this date, an oral argument regarding the Chisom v. State of Louisiana case will be heard by the justices at the court. This case will impact the Voting Rights Act as well as Black representation on the Louisiana Supreme Court."

"The Birth & Beyond Summit theme, "Advancing community-based approaches to birth equity," reflects HealthConnect One's commitment to community-led initiatives, locally driven research and solutions, and movement building across the reproductive justice, birth equity, maternal and early childhood health spectrum.

We emphasize the importance of centering on community-led initiatives to reinvest in underserved communities and increase local efforts to reduce health inequities and advance reproductive justice. Birth and Beyond 2023 recognizes the timely need to elevate community strengths in pursuing hope for Black, Brown, and Indigenous birthing families and their communities.

The 2023 Birth and Beyond Summit will meet the need for a space to convene, strategize, and share ideas led and created by Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities."
