Dear Maynard Family,

It's devastating to our profession and to our democracy when journalists are murdered while reporting. We join the journalism community in mourning 24-year-old Dylan Lyons who was a dedicated local journalist for Spectrum News 13 in Florida. We also recognize the killing of journalists has dramatically increased in the last year, as recently reported by the Committee to Protect Journalists. See the links below for details.

The work we do is more vital than ever. And we are so proud of the Maynard Institute's team bringing our mission to upcoming industry events. We invite you to join their sessions online and in-person later this month.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Among journalists, shock at Dylan Lyons’ murder is coupled with a strong sense of ‘what if?’
By Brian Stelter

Diversity roles disappear 3 years after George Floyd's murder inspired them
By Curtis Bunn

“Diversity, equity and inclusion leaders, who were hired in waves to help companies achieve an ethnically balanced workforce after George Floyd’s murder in 2020, are being phased out, surveys indicate, leaving experts in the field concerned that corporations’ talk of affecting change was just empty words.” Read more.

What went wrong at the New York Times?
By Jude Ellison S. Doyle

“Media is made by people, and those people have politics and relationships and sympathies. Pure objectivity does not exist, and the pretense of objectivity—the newsroom ideal that all “sides” of an issue should be heard—often harms marginalized people more than it helps them.” Read more.

By Kelly Chan

"...journalists and newsrooms, especially those that are mainstream or legacy organizations, must actively work to build trust with these communities to evaluate holes in their reporting, produce more informed coverage and ultimately better serve local audiences."  Read more.
