Who Knows One? Newsletter: March 2023

Hi <<First Name>>

Hola from Valencia! We’re trying something new around here at Who Knows One? It’s a monthly newsletter that celebrates what’s great about this community.

This is a place to connect and reconnect, have fun, share some of your best Jewish Geography stories, solve Jewish Geography mysteries, even help you find the right person for a job you’re trying to fill. If we can be of service, let us know!

Right now we’re gearing up for the third-annual Elijah’s Cup (side note - three years, good lord!), which will take place March 20-22 right on the Who Knows One? FB page. Last year brought the Battle of the Beth Els, this time around it’s the Showdown of the Sinais.

Eight Sinai synagogues will compete across two nights of competition for the right to drink from Elijah’s Cup and declare themselves the finest Sinai in the land! Don’t miss it!

Great Jewish Geography Stories

One of my favorite parts of Who Knows One? is the JG stories I hear. I delight in each and every one (okay maybe not quite that much - but most of them!). If you have a great story, reach out to us and share it. We may just feature you in an upcoming newsletter and add it to our burgeoning collection of stories on YouTube!

For our inaugural newsletter, we’re highlighting our favorite story ever shared on our show, courtesy of Jennifer Rubin and Rebekah Jordan. I call it, Yarmalkah Simpatica:

Who Knows One? Mysteries

We famously solved the mystery of the acoustic Humpty Dance (RIP Humpty Hump), and by we, I mean the Who Knows One? detectives out there who did a little digging with the determination of ants building a colony. Each newsletter we’ll try to put things right in the universe - reconnect long-lost friends, return a kiddush cup to its rightful owner, figure out a solution to (almost!) anything that’s been weighing on you. Let us know and we’ll put our sleuths on the hunt.

This month, we’re on a mission to help out Hana Tova, who is trying to reconnect her bubby with a former mahjongg chavera. From Hana:

“My Bubby (Arlene Damsky) - who recently lost my grandfather (Mike Damsky) - has been reconnecting with old friends. When she had my mom in Brooklyn (1970s), the other ladies in her building used to get together and play mahjongg. She wants to find one woman but can't remember the last name. It was 2011, Ocean Ave Brooklyn, and the woman she’s looking for is Phyllis. Her husband is Andre, and he owned a hair salon. Their kids (she thinks) were Chad and Stacey. There was also a woman named Judy in the building, who is one of the women she’s reconnected with. Neither can remember the last name of this other family.”

Think you can help Hana and her bubby? Email her with any info that could help!

THIS JUST IN: Right as we were about to publish, this mystery hit our mailbox. Let’s go for two this month!

Who Knows One? Job Connections

Each month we’ll try to highlight a job posting, either from an organization we love or for a role that seems like a cool, unique opportunity. Have a job you want to recommend? Email us and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter.

This month’s recommendation is the Director of Spirituality for the Institute of Southern Jewish Life.

I admit a personal bias towards the ISJL, and because I know it intimately I know that this gig would be such an amazing job to have. From the description:

“More than 100 congregations in the ISJL’s region are without any local full-time Jewish clergy person, which leaves them lacking professional guidance and support, spiritual inspiration, and ongoing Jewish education. That is where you can make a world of difference.

The impact this position can have on a wide variety of communities is pretty cool. If you know someone who wants to combine a sense of adventure with a desire to maximize their impact geographically, tell them to apply today!

Who Knows One? Is F*cking Fun - We’ll Prove It

Most organizations we talk to want FUN programs for their communities that bring people together. Fun…bringing people together…hey, that’s what we do! Our live show has been a hit from coast-to-coast, and we’re now booking dates for the 2023-24 school year. The live show is great for synagogues, schools, JCCs, you name it.

Check out the feedback we got from our recent show at Beth Tfiloh in Baltimore, MD:

“Our school's first in-person Parents Night Out event since the pandemic was a huge success, and Who Knows One? was a major draw for our sell-out crowd. The only bad thing is now that it's over, our families expect another top notch entertainment event like this - and Who Knows One? set that bar very high!” — Kimberly Wynn, Beth Tfiloh

How can we help build your community? Reach out to us today to inquire about dates.
