Tuesday March 7
noon-1pm - Connections with Hope Zoom community
Dear People of Hope,
All throughout Lent at Hope, we'll reflect on the theme and practice of Sabbath. As I've shared, sabbath may be the most needed, least practiced biblical command. I am hearing that sabbath practices might be new to many of you, but that you are already considering what Sabbath might look like in your life. Here are some books and resources that might guide your thinking, as they have mine.
Sabbath Book and Resource List:
The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man
By Abraham Joshua Heschel A classic Jewish text on this theme
Sabbath in the Suburbs: A Family’s Experiment with Holy Time
By MaryAnn McKibben Dana A funny and relatable memoir of a Christian family seeking sabbath in northern Virginia
Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives
By Wayne Muller A collection of short essays on different sabbath themes; includes poetry, practices and questions for reflection
Sabbath as Resistance, a session from Dr. Ryan Bonfiglio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IlvvLqOZ8I A 30-minute video that the Metro DC Synod shared at the 2021 Synod Assembly
Ezra Klein Podcast, on the theme of Sabbath
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/03/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-judith-shulevitz.html A New York Times podcaster reflects on sabbath in his own, fairly secular life
Blessings on your reading, watching and listening. And blessings on your holy rest.
Peace of Christ,
Pastor Julie
ps - In Sunday's sermon, I talked about Richard Smallwood and his contemporary gospel music. Read more about his life and music in this Washington Post article.
movies@hope presents "Three Minutes - A Lengthening" Friday March 10, 7:30pm at Hope
In just a couple weeks, movies@hope returns from our long hiatus with the recent documentary, Three Minutes - A Lengthening. In 1938, an American immigrant returned to his hometown in Poland with a home movie camera and shot a 3 minute snippet of 16mm film. Discovered decades later by his grandson, David Kurtz, this haunting glimpse into the lives of the unsuspecting Jewish citizens of the village at the precipice of World War II led Kurtz on an emotionally charged journey to uncover the fate of the town and its people. Join your friends and neighbors for the film and discussion afterwards!
The film will be shown at the church only; there will be no Zoom link. We are still determining safety protocols and possible refreshments to be offered. We will provide an update on these matters a week before the event. Meanwhile, please let Paul T know if you have any questions!
Hope to see you then, and invite a friend or neighbor! And, if you belong to a neighborhood listserv, please circulate the flyer to your email list. It's through efforts like these we've been able to get the word out to an ever-wider community.
Alex plays Brahms for his final dissertation recital Friday, March 16, at 8pm
Hope's beloved musician, Alex, will perform for his final doctoral dissertation recital on March 16. This will include music from Brahms and a time of Alex discussing his written dissertation. This event is free and no tickets are required; just come to The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Glidenhorn Hall. We join Alex in prayer for his continued success.
Want to have dinner before the concert? Join others at Le Fantome in Riverdale Park (near Whole Foods) at 6:30pm., https://lefantomefoodhall.com/
Turkish Earthquake Relief Concert Wednesday March 29, 7:30pm at Hope
