Letter from the Editor:

Hey folx,

Spring break is almost here, thankfully!

As ya'll know, March is Women's History Month, and we are celebrating at Sloss through art and community aid!

Make sure to check out information about ARTiculations and the Resource Room in this newsletter!

Pride Alliance, a LGBTQIA+ student organization on campus, is holding a gender affirming care drive to help our new resource room! If you want to donate, don't be afraid to reach out!

The Sloss Center still has recent additions, like the kids corner in our space! It is available for students, faculty, and staff with children to have an accessible place to hang out on campus.  As well, come in weekly for a sweet treat that we provide! They are delicious and free for the public!

This is my continuous reminder that everyone at the Sloss Center is a resource to students, faculty, and staff on campus and we will support folx in any way that we can.

We have many community aid and resources to help you navigate through, and are in the process of creating even more opportunities for individuals who visit the Sloss Center. So please feel free to stop by and chat with any of us on the Sloss staff. As well, we have a lot of community aid programming coming up, so keep a look out!

As always, continuous events and programs are happening throughout Iowa State, make sure to stay up to date and join in, meet some amazing individuals, and learn about different identities.

Any additional information about the Sloss Center can be found on our website

If any individuals have any questions about events, programs or community aid, please reach out to me: mamason@iastate.edu

In community,

Madison Mason (she/they)
PR and Communications intern.

Women's History Month at Sloss

For Women's History Month, the Margaret Sloss Center for Women's and Gender Equity is celebrating by uplifting women and gender non-conforming artists through the ARTiculations series.

As well, Sloss will be opening our resource room during the month of March, in efforts to represent the feminist fight against poverty, and understanding gender justice within oppressive economic systems.

An interview series focusing on the contributions of local women and non-binary artists.

The third volume of interviews in the series features Catherine Reinhart, Sasha Phillips, Jo Allen, and Tashina Azure. The interviews will air on KHOI Radio, 89.1 FM on Mondays at 4pm throughout March for local listeners. Not local? Listen live at khoifm.org

This program is hosted by Nancy Gebhart as a collaboration between the Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity and KHOI Community Radio.

Catherine, Sasha, Jo, and Tashina were asked to provide a playlist to accompany their interviews. Those songs were collected as an ARTiculations Volume 3 Spotify playlist

ARTiculations

AAUW Start Smart salary negotiation workshops are specifically designed to teach you how to negotiate salaries for a new job. In every two-hour workshop you will gain confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play and learn:

  • How to identify and articulate your personal value
  • How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other strategies to use when negotiating
  • How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
  • About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

Negotiations can increase the potential to earn higher salaries and better benefits packages. By negotiating fair and equitable salaries, you will be better able to pay off loans, buy the things you want and need, and even save (though it may seem like it is far away) for retirement.

Register here for the next workshop on April 7.

More information can be found on our website.

Crafternoons

Formerly a speaker series, Feminist Fridays are 'crafternoon' sessions at the Sloss House. Through the healing process of creativitymaking, and creating, we connect with our communities and end the week together in solidarity.
