An open portal

I am fascinated with doors. Maybe that’s why I painted images on many of them throughout my art days—ten doors in my old art studio, armoires, heirlooms, business and home doors, cabinet and closet doors.

This painting on a bedroom door is still on display in my old art studio. I painted a similar image on the side door of a popular restaurant here in Pagosa Springs.

Many years ago, a friend asked me to help her open her restaurant. On a shoestring, she couldn’t afford wall decorations or tile on the floor. I told her I had painted murals on walls. I also had painted throw rugs on old scratched wooden floors. When anyone walked into the place of business, they either walked around or carefully stepped over not to trip on the fringe or the folds painted on the rug.

A year later, the restaurant changed hands, now called Kips. The new owners painted over the murals and covered the floor. Only one door with art remains.

Thirty years ago, a dear sweet lady came into my art gallery in Albuquerque. She said, “I’d like to pray for you.” She prayed, “You are a portal for the Christian artists to show their art in the marketplace. In the spiritual realm, you are an open door for many to pass through.”

An open door? I wasn’t sure how that would look for others to spiritually pass through. I am a connector of sorts, and I enjoy introducing people to each other. But to be an open door for others, I soon learned some valuable lessons.

Many people I introduced to each other became friends, business partners, or ministry supporters. They flourished and moved on. At the time, it seemed thoughtless to me how they enjoyed each other without me. They passed through the door of my life into someone else’s life and closed the door behind them. The hard lesson was to learn how to let go.

Whatever I contributed as a door to pass through, the good-will I offered to my friends and others still remains in the history of our friendship.

As we walk through bigger doors or stand still for others to pass through, we may never know how great and effective we have been in another person’s life.

Be inspired,

BOOK NEWS

Very soon! Taming Wild Hearts, Book One in the Disappointment Valley Series, will be release.

Meanwhile, I’m having fun introducing the characters and places in my up-and-coming book.

On a horseback ride in the high meadows on the Crawford River Ranch, a storm forced Luke Barrett and Bree Steele into an old shack. Only knowing each other a few days, now alone, awkward, and not certain of each other, the shelter became a place for their friendship to ignite and grow.

Luke’s thoughts: I could tell Bree was scared to be alone with me. We listened to the rain drops on the roof of that old shack. I watched her in the glow of those embers until they turned cold in that sooty rock fireplace. She stirred something in me. I wondered what could be.
