Welcome to FICDO's February 2023 newsletter. Below, find highlights of what we have been up to during the past four weeks. As always, we thank you for enabling us to enable our community.

Serving During School Break

We recognise that most of the young persons we serve don't get enough meals at home. Hence, FICDO's community center/kitchen remained open during the Semester break.  Our community centre also meets some of the emotional needs of the young persons by providing them safe space to flourish.  The centre provides a chance for the young persons to make friends, rediscover the joy of playing with other friends, and forget (even if temporarily) and get a break from the realities of challenging environments at "home".   (Some of the children come from guardians self-identifying as sex-workers).  We are grateful for our volunteers for their compassion and putting the young persons' needs before their own by serving during the school break.

Rising Cost of Living Squeezing Families

Food prices are continually soaring in Ethiopia. Even families with "reasonable" incomes are now struggling to put food on the table. At FICDO, we are humbled to be able to continue providing daily meals during this critical time to one hundred school-age children from vulnerable backgrounds. This support means a lot; it minimises school dropouts, early marriage and gender-based violence.

We are grateful to our supporters for enabling us serve the marginalised. If you would like to support this cause, we are accepting donations through the GoFundMe platform, which you can access through this link https://gofund.me/3e71e5b5

Online "Coaching/Mentoring" Service

Through FICDO's Sponsorship Program we pair a young person with a "Sponsor" who may  support, guide and mentor the former.  After FICDO's field office in Fitche got connected to the Internet last month, we started an online "mentoring/coaching" service on a trial basis.  Despite the usual connection glitches, we have had a couple of successful sessions/calls in the last few weeks. Our ultimate goal is to build bridges, connect people and enable them to empower each other.  We also believe that this service will add transparency to what we are doing, by giving our supporters a chance to put a name and face to where their hard-earned money is going.  We are excited about this project!

We are excited to have received donation of three desktops from Mr Habtamu Tesfaye, CEO of Habtamu Tesfaye Certified Audit Firm in Ethiopia. These desktops will be vital in the provision of the online mentoring/coaching service that we mentioned above. We would like to thank Habtamu for the donations.  We also thank Tesfaye Negussie, a member of FICDO's leadership team, for connecting us with Habtamu.
#Everylittlehelps #Communitysupport #Girlseducation

One of our overseas supporters sent us clothing assortments for fifteen girls. It was all smiles and joy for the girls who got the clothes as well as our volunteers who witnessed it. Poet and Journalist Abera Lema, one of FICDO's Trustees, connected us with the donor for which we are grateful.

Update on FICDO's Other Projects/Programs
  • Our volunteers continue to drop packed meals from our community kitchen, on daily basis, to fifteen elderlies with no family.
  • Our self-help income generating project for women is also going smoothly.
  • We also continue to provide after school support for the young persons, thanks to our volunteers.  However, shortage of space means we were unable to run multiple sessions at a time. We intend to collaborate with local schools to solve this problem.
  • The annual tree-planting season is fast-approaching. Hence, our environmental committee is busy planning.
  • The leadership team continues to meet on weekly basis to discuss project activities as well as continually reflect on why we serve.  We are grateful to our volunteers, community and friends for your prayers and continuous moral and financial support.  Without your support, we wouldn't have been able to serve.

Want to Take Part in Enabling a Young Person?

Are you one of those people who want the very best for children? Does news of deprivation and the extreme poverty of millions of children in our world trouble you?  We won't promise to 'fix' world poverty. However, here is an opportunity to enable a young person...Just 20 USD a month can turnaround the life of a young person trapped in extreme poverty.  For just 20 USD, FICDO provides the necessities for the young person to stay in School, including daily meals, school uniform, school materials, and after school and community support. If you wish to take part, please contact us at info@ficdo.org and we will send you the handbook that contains details of our program including the profiles of the young persons.
