Friends —

We are proud to bring you, starting Friday, another multi-academy award-nominated film to the State Theatre.  ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT has no less than 9 noms, including Best Picture of the Year. Based on the 1929 novel by Remarque, it is the recounting of young German Paul Baumer's journey after he eagerly enlists in the German military with his classmates at the beginning of World War I.  This film is still as relevant today as the year the book was written. This film is 2022’s one true masterpiece that will be heralded for years to come. German filmmakers finally telling their story set in the most idiotic war (I know, they’re all idiotic). Already declared by many as one of the best anti-war movies ever made. Before we restored and reopened the State Theatre this is exactly the kind of brilliant film that would never be played in Traverse City or anywhere north of Ann Arbor. Take advantage of this local treasure while it’s still here.

The Oscars only happen once a year, and we would be remiss if we didn't pack as many Oscar noms into the Bijou by the Bay before the big night.  We have a triple treat lined up for you this coming week, beginning tomorrow: GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIOTO LESLIE,  and EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO, nominated for Best Animated Feature Film,  is the reimagined story of a wooden boy wanting to be a real boy.  This dark fantasy was written for the times we live in.  Life can be cruel, finding happiness can be fleeting, but this movie knits together the fabric of the glum outlook on life (the story is set in 1930s fascist Italy) with hope and the life-giving power of love. (This film is not for young children)

TO LESLIE, featuring Oscar Nominee Andrea Riseborough for Best Actress in a Leading Role reminds us even when a person has used up their second, third, and even fourth chance, there is always room for reflection and redemption.  Everyone, no matter how many poor decisions a person may make, still deserves support and an opportunity.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, nominated for 9 Academy Awards, is being held over to give you another chance to take this fantastically fast and furious ride through time and space, defy some gravity, and end up right where you should be.  Several of your friends and neighbors have come back for a second time to experience the film again!

Nothing is more rewarding than knowing you are ensuring the bright future of your non-profit historic film houses by volunteering.  Be part of the grand history of these special theaters.  Remember when you saw your first film there? As a child or adult, the wonder of walking in, seeing the architecture, the smiling faces of volunteers, the delicious smell of fresh popcorn, and the majesty of the curtain.  By volunteering, you can take pride in keeping these independent movie theaters thriving.
