HOT LIT!
curated by scott alexander hess novelist/teacher/queer new yorker

I've followed the inimitable Taylor Mac since 2009 when my dear friend David Drake directed Mac's The Lily's Revenge at NYC HERE Arts Center.

What a joy to come across the fantastic new The Taylor Mac Book on instagram. Bravo! If you love Taylor, grab it and if you aren't familiar grab it!

Published by University of Michigan press this is "the first book to dedicate critical attention to the work of influential theater-maker Taylor Mac....Featuring essays, interviews, and commentaries by noted critics and artists, the volume examines the vastness of Mac’s theatrical imagination, the singularity of their voice, the inclusiveness of their cultural insights and critiques, and the creativity they display through stylistic and formal qualities and the unorthodoxies of their personal and professional trajectories."

In line with Sydney Pride, why not head over to the land down under for BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! a project by The Little Black Gallery London to promote queer and gay photography (Above photo: Luiz by Xavier Samre).

According to the gallery "The project represents more than 60 photographers from 30 countries including China, India, Iran, Poland, and Russia – where gay rights are repressed and queer lives under constant threat. BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! now includes exhibitions, books, bi-annual magazine, photography courses, photo competition, and an online art platform.

There have been BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! exhibitions in Amsterdam, Cologne, Dublin, London and Los Angeles. This will be the first BOYS! BOYS! BOYS! exhibition in Australia hosted by Working Dog Gallery."

Get the full skinny on Boy! Boys! Boys!

As an Indie writer, I am uber-encouraged to see fellow writers publish. Case in point my old chum Patrick E. Horrigan!

Both New Yorker's we've talked books, writing and shared laughs over the past few years and I was thrilled to see his new novel American Scholar (Lethe Press) hit the stands! A bit of info. below.

"It's the story of a writer and professor whose life is upended when an unsent letter surfaces from his first love of thirty years ago. Kirkus Reviews calls it "a haunting, complex look at love, gay history, and the passage of time." Performance artist and author Tim Miller says "AMERICAN SCHOLAR is an exquisite and soulful leap into the landscape of love and memory, literature and history."

Hot Lit Finale!

Since a wee queen in Missouri I have loved Oscar night. As a novelist, every movie I see I check the source material (many based on novels, short stories and plays) which lifts my heart up!

A few of my personal nominated film faves this year: All Quiet On The Western Front (based on a novel), The Whale (based on a play), The Banshees of Inisherin (began as a play never performed), Living (adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's film Ikiru, which itself was an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novel "The Death of Ivan Ilyich.)

Coming next month: I begin a great new give-away campaign featuring several of my novels. Stay tuned!
