Message from Catherine Hensiek, CAA President!!
How can you find inspiration when your creative juices run dry? Take a class? Get together with other artists to share your work and talk about your process? Submit your work to an art show?

Do you have ideas or feelings that you yearn to express visually, but you don't know how to get started? If you do feel short of inspiration or motivation, CAA may be able to help in several different ways.

Check out concordartassociation.org for the names and contact information for member artists who offer both in-person and online classes. Among our members you will recognize the names of teachers that have presented programs at CAA meetings over the years. There is sure to be a class that stirs your interest!

Starting in May we will expand our time at member meetings for showing and discussing member art. You will have an opportunity to learn from other artists about their methods and inspiration. Plan to bring your own artwork to share and discuss.

At our May member meeting, artist/author Tesia Blackburn will present a program on Golden paints and lead a project for attendees. Look for details in this newsletter about how you can order your "goodie" bag of sample products before the meeting.

As a CAA member, you will have multiple opportunities to show and sell your art this year, starting with the show at the Concord Visitor Center in April and the Colors of Spring Art and Craft Show and Sale in May. Check out the Call for Artists page on our website. We'll add more shows to that page as plans are completed. Whether you create small or very large work, we'll have a show for you this year!
Fun Crafting, Inspirational Mini Art Show at CAA’s First Members Meeting of 2023!

Twenty-six Concord Art Association members attended this year’s first quarterly members meeting on February 14th at the Concord Library. The fun event was highlighted by a Valentine’s Day craft project taught by our own CAA Secretary, Liz Roberts, who guided us create to mini-boxes to deliver candy treats to our valentine. Everyone had time to chat, catch up, and have loads of laughs while cutting, folding, and gluing together our artsy boxes.

The Mini Art Show drew twelve entries. Winners of the contest:
• First place: Renaye Johnson (“Horatio” acrylic media)
• Second place: Natalie Gamble (“Coming and Going” acrylic media)
• Third place (tie): Janice Davis (“Bridal Veil Falls” acrylic media) and Diane Oles (“Victorian in Mendocino” watercolor media)

This mini show is the last one Barbara Nebeker will be organizing. A big thank-you to Barbara for conducting the Mini Art Show at every members meeting for many years! We really appreciate your dedication to keeping this tradition going for CAA! Not to worry about the fate of the show. Please give a big welcome to Carrie VanHouten for volunteering to take over the show for upcoming meetings. Thank you, Carrie!

All attendees were given a blank name tag and name badge holders for future meetings. Members were asked to decorate their name tags and return with them to our next meeting. All media are encouraged. The only requirement is that your name be on the badge. Prize ribbons will be awarded to the top three name tags by vote! If you were not at the meeting but would like to participate in the name badge contest, please send an email to concordartassociation@yahoo.com and request a blank name badge. We will contact you to make arrangements for delivery.

Next Members Meeting:

The next members meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 9, at 1pm at the Concord Library. Guest speaker will be Golden Paint representative Tesia Blackburn. For more information about Tesia and her amazing art check out her website acrylicdiva.com.

Don’t forget to bring your latest art with an easel to participate in the Mini Art Show!

Utility Box Project Update!

We are so excited to let everyone know, that the new traffic control boxes for the City of Concord have arrived!!

The CAA Utility Box Project Committee is working with The City of Concord to move forward as quickly as possible to have artwork painted on these boxes.  Within the next couple of weeks we will have our selected artists begin painting and very soon these beautiful boxes will be installed throughout the City of Concord!!

This project began last year and due to supply chain interruptions the artists have been waiting patiently to start. Well, finally it's “Go Time”. We would like to thank the City of Concord Staff for all their assistance with this project.  We will have fourteen traffic control boxes painted by sixteen artists during the first phase and an additional six boxes painted during the second phase of this project. Keep a watch out for another call for art on the remaining six boxes.

The City of Concord is sponsoring half of these boxes. The Concord Art Association has been asking for donations to fund the other half of this project.  If anyone is interested in donating to this project in designated amounts, CAA will install a plaque on the box showing your generosity.  You can sponsor an entire box for $1,000.00 or half a box for $500.00 or one side of a box for $250.00. Or, you can donate any amount at our CAA Website, concordartassociation.org or by mailing a check to Concord Art Association, PO Box 641, Concord, CA  94522-0641.

We are looking forward to more beautiful Utility Box Art in the City of Concord!!

Mira M. White: Mira's Mixed Media Mash-Up!
March 20-May 15, 2023 (No Class March 27)
(8 weeks)
Mondays 10 am – 1 pm
This vibrant class explores abstraction and representation with multiple layers and multiple media techniques. Acrylic, watercolor, Oil, cold wax, pigment sticks, and collage converse on a variety of surfaces, emphasizing the unity of design, texture, and color.  We work with a combination of both dry & wet media, including soft pastels, watercolor, oil paint, pigment sticks, charcoal, graphite, and collage.  Acrylic media can serve as a base underpainting.  All imagery is applicable.  Appropriate for continuing painters, who work toward developing a strong personal vocabulary.  The class will meet weekly from 10 am-1 pm for discussion, live demos, an opportunity to work in class, and a presentation of work. It is my hope that participants can exchange ideas and form a lively exchange.  Enroll at https://www.studio55martinez.com/workshops-and-classes

Carl Heyward’s PUSH/PRACTICE WORKSHOP
Sunday, March 26, 2023 (12pm - 3pm)
Pushing Practice While Identifying and Breaking Habitual Modes of Working: Paying attention to what’s actually happening with materials; how they interact and evolve; how ideas present themselves in various ways in conjunction with this process often supersedes  expectation and offers opportunities for broader, richer, more personal expression. These are a few of the goals presented in The Carl Heyward Mixed-Media Workshops, achieved through the suspension of self-judgement, ordering creativity and analysis to their appropriate times and places; discovering confidence in problem resolution; to take risks.  Enroll at Carl Heyward's Push/Practice Workshop - Sunday, March 26, 2023 (12pm - 3pm) — Studio 55 Martinez
