Why the definition of design might need a change


When we unpack its current meaning, we may find that we want—and need—to retool the word yet again, according to Architecture's Nicholas de Monchaux in MIT Technology Review.

Sensing with purpose


Fadel Adib SM '13, PhD '16 uses wireless technologies to sense the world in new ways, taking aim at sweeping problems such as food insecurity, climate change, and access to health care. Director of the MIT Media Lab's Signal Kinetics group, Adib and his students apply knowledge and creativity to global problems.

Detroit aims to spur new housing, boost property values with tax change


Doctoral student Nick Allen MCP '17 is interviewed and has his work shared in the Wall Street Journal for a story on a proposed change on how Detroit taxes property. “I think this is a policy that works in any city in Michigan and works in a lot of distressed cities in a similar way,” says Allen.

Greening affordable housing

 

Equipped with a degree in art and design, Kim Vermeer '82 founded Urban Habitat Initiatives, a consulting firm that helps affordable-housing developers meet their goals for sustainability and climate resilience. Read her profile in MIT Technology Review.
 
The Andrea Chegut Fellowship Fund

The Andrea Chegut Fellowship Fund has been established to offer financial support to female graduate students in the School of Architecture and Planning who are interested in applying design to solve complex problems and make a positive impact on the human environment. Areas of study could include, but are not limited to, design innovation and research, real estate technology, and entrepreneurship. This endowed fellowship honors the life and work of Andrea Chegut, research scientist and co-founder of the MIT Real Estate Innovation Lab and MITdesignX.

Energy Storage Student Slam

Interested in finding out about energy storage projects at MIT? MIT undergraduate and graduate students will participate in a rapid-fire series of presentations on energy storage projects they are currently conducting or have recently completed that will help fight the climate crisis.
