Do the Work!

6 week workshop
Sundays beginning March 26th
6:00 - 7:30 pm at Paint on Pottery

Participants found our Speaking of Race book group so helpful that we've decided to keep the momentum going. Beginning Sunday, March 26th thru May 2nd (no meeting April 9th), we'll undertake a collaborative, hands-on journey through Do the Work: An Antiracist Activity Book. This thought-provoking, highly illustrated, interactive workbook by comedian W. Kamu Bell (United Shades of America; Private School Negro) and feminist author/activist Kate Schatz (Rad Girls Can) challenges readers to think critically and act effectively. With games and puzzles like the "Separate but Not Equal" crossword puzzle, "Bootstrapping, the Game" to understand the myth of meritocracy, and "Jim Crow or Jim Faux?" to test your understanding of racist laws, we'll build skills and have hard conversations (scripts and talking points included). It is a great opportunity to learn from each other and explore the hundreds of ideas this book offers, to allow us better to take the actions needed to change our community.

Space is limited - click here to register!

You can find Do the Work! at Workman PressBookshop.org; IndieBound; Barnes & Noble; Books-A-Million; and Amazon
YORK COUNTY RESIDENTS - Contact County Supervisors in support of Springfield Road residents

In 2018, Springfield road - a small, tight-knit, mostly Black neighborhood in upper York County - was rezoned to enable developers to run all of the construction vehicles for Ryan Homes “Tranquility” 55+ independent living community through it. Now, enormous, noisy construction trucks and tractor trailers come down this narrow road (only 14 feet wide) up to 200 times per day, destroying the peace and safety of this previously quiet residential street. Many of the residents on Springfield Road are elderly and not well and have lived there for many years. At least one family moved there after the black community was evicted from the land that became Camp Peary. If an EMS vehicle needed to get into the neighborhood, the likelihood of the road being blocked by a construction vehicle is significant. The construction is projected to continue for another five years.

The Conserve York County Foundation is supporting the Springfield Road residents in demanding an immediate pause on the issuance of construction permits for this 203-home Tranquility development until a real solution, satisfactory to the residents of Springfield Road is found and implemented.  Please write your supervisors and express your concerns about what's been done to these residents. Email addresses are: zaremba@yorkcounty.gov, noll@yorkcounty.gov, shepperd@yorkcounty.gov, Chad.Green@yorkcounty.gov, Stephen.Roane@yorkcounty.gov
