Welcome to the March 2023 edition of the Arts South Australia Bulletin.

A message from the Minister for Arts

What a wonderful time to be in South Australia! There’s a palpable sense of excitement and creative energy that only our arts and creative sectors can create right across our state.

It’s been incredible to see our South Australian artists shine in the Adelaide Fringe.

The State Government has ensured the work of our home-grown creatives takes centre stage in our magnificent Fringe Festival - the largest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere. We are also proud to support the broad range of artist services provided by the Adelaide Fringe including the renewed focus on export and the return of international programmers to the Honeypot marketplace.

The Adelaide Festival has also begun including world premiere seasons from our world-class companies Windmill Theatre, Slingsby and ADT.

The remarkable Andy Warhol exhibition exclusive to the Art Gallery of South Australia opened last week, Writers’ Week is in full swing and WOMADelaide is about to begin.

Meanwhile, I am thrilled that two South Australian-made films have won top awards at Berlin International Film Festival last month. The Survival of Kindness won the prestigious FIPRESCI Jury Prize, and short film Marungka Tjalatjunu/Dipped in Black took home the coveted Silver Bear Jury Prize (Short Film) and the Teddy Award for Best Short Film. Read all about it on the SAFC website.

South Australia is the festival state and our extraordinary artists and creatives are well and truly putting on a show for us this month!

Artist development fundamental at Adelaide Fringe

Did you know Adelaide Fringe has dedicated artist development and support that goes on year-round in the background?

The Adelaide Fringe Professional Development Series runs from April to January and breaks down the artist journey from concept, to development, to registrations, to Fringe season. With monthly offerings from experts, it is a great opportunity to learn all throughout the year while building skills, strengthening industry knowledge through peer-to-peer learning and creating thoughtful conversations. Topics include budgeting, grant writing, touring, pitching, marketing, and so much more.

AVR, the Adelaide Fringe’s registration platform for venue and event registrations, is also host to a large library of resources providing information all about taking part in Adelaide Fringe. Resources cover everything from registration assistance, information portal, industry opportunities, contacts and tutorials.

The Adelaide Fringe Arts Industry Collaboration program supports small to medium arts organisations to work together, combining resources in order to build new audiences, work with experienced practitioners, and create opportunities for artists in South Australia. Projects include mentoring, residencies, new developments and program support. The program’s aim is to create a strong, vibrant, connected arts community, collaborate with arts organisations and to fulfil Adelaide Fringe goals including thriving venues, fulfilled artists, engaged audiences and adding the WOW element to events. The Adelaide Fringe Arts Industry Collaborations are co-funded by the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation and the Adelaide Fringe Foundation.

During the Festival (February and March) Adelaide Fringe provides an active workspace for artists to utilise called FringeWORKS. The Fringe team works directly from FringeWORKS from 10am to 8pm daily and facilities include hot desks, Wi-Fi, printing, laminating, aircon and meeting spaces.

Honeypot is Adelaide Fringe’s International Arts Marketplace that takes place over 4 weeks during the Fringe and is an invaluable opportunity for artists to connect with international presenters and programmers through tailored networking and connections. In 2023, international delegates are back in full force, and the Honeypot is buzzing!

Glimpse the future with latest Adelaide CreaTech City Challenge project

Visitors to the Adelaide Central Market can now interact with a large, interactive fortune cookie as part of Adelaide’s CreaTech City Challenge, a joint initiative funded by the Department for Industry, Innovation and Science, the City of Adelaide and the Adelaide Economic Development Agency.

Presented by award-winning experience design studio, Sandpit, The Cookie gives the public a chance to see into the future thanks to this one-of-a-kind digital artwork.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, this interactive piece utilises creative technology to predict the future, from the personal to the global, using an AI-based text generator.

The free art installation, when activated, will ‘dispense’ a digital fortune unfurling from a giant cookie along a curved, paper-shaped LED screen.

The Cookie is an example of the kind of interactive and engaging artistic experiences that can result from bringing together technology and creativity and will be open during Adelaide Central Market trading hours.

The CreaTech City Challenge brought together collaborative projects to combine creativity and technology to engage audiences, support business growth and encourage investment in Adelaide’s public realm.

Art set to inspire action to tackle climate change

The Adelaide Festival is inviting young South Australians to express themselves artistically as part of a new endeavour, Create4Adelaide.

The year-long project encourages young people to develop their creative skills while engaging with local climate change priorities.

In February, young people were invited to vote on their climate change priorities in Adelaide and South Australia, with these priorities set to be revealed during this month’s Adelaide Festival.

Students will then be invited to create art that offers ideas to address these priorities and inspire action from next month, with artworks later to be selected for the 2024 Adelaide Festival.

Create4Adelaide offers a new way of using art to empower our younger generations to become activists against global warming. Find out more at Create4Adelaide.au
