Rush Deadline

Volunteer to Serve on San Antonio’s SA Climate Ready Committees

Seats are open on the two SA Climate Ready committees, tasked with helping guide implementation of the City of San Antonio’s 2019 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. If you are interested, click through here, click ‘Apply Now,’ and scroll down to Climate Ready. There are open seats on both the Technical/Community and Equity committees and members up for reappointment. But seeing as the last two meetings of the Equity committee have been cancelled for lack of attendance, that may be the surer bet for motivated residents.

Deadline to apply is Friday, Friday, March 3.

How Are We Doing?

Deceleration doesn’t mind sharing that our time and focus is strained. With a staff of one and gazillion ideas (including this newsletter and calendar, new in 2023), we have our ideas about what should happen next. But they start and end in consultation with our readers, supporters, and advisors. We don’t have time or energy to misspend on efforts that aren’t meeting a real community need.

Let us know where we should be focusing our attentions in 2023.

Deceleration shared the work of Stanford University professor Mark Jacobson—one of the researchers guiding the science behind the drive for a Green New Deal—in a recent newsletter. Jacobson argues convincingly that even Texas can kick fossil fuels and shift to a reliable, affordable energy grid with existing technology while growing jobs. Here’s your chance to hear from Jacobson directly on the findings contained in his book “No Miracles Needed: How Today’s Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air.” He is joined by Ken Cook, who some of you know as a cofounder of the Environmental Working Group, which works to protect human health and the environment.

Youth Grants for Water Projects

That’s ~$11,000 (USD) smackeroos for youth-led sustainable water projects!

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) just launched the 2023 Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) and invites youth from Canada, Mexico and the United States to submit entrepreneurial innovations addressing water challenges, including drought, climate change, toxic chemicals, water quality, and more. This year’s challenge will also support the ongoing efforts of the United Nations International Decade for Water Action, with a special focus on the connection between water and climate change. Guidelines and submission form here.
