Assalamu alaykum,

We have 9 updates to share with you in today's newsletter:

(1) Ramadan Positions: multiply your rewards this Ramadan by getting involved at the masjid.

(2) Spiritual and Mental Health in Islam: learn about spiritual and mental health through an Islamic narrative.

(3) Teen Girls Talk: the AMA Big Sisters Club invites girls ages 13 - 18 to discuss and reflect on Tawakkul this Friday, March 3.

(4) Eating Disorders Workshop: learn more about identifying, de-stigmatising and addressing eating disorders on March 11.

(5) La Leche League: La Leche League is back next Thursday to support the pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

(6) Youth Events: join us as we resume Youth Friday Soccer this week at Canterbury High School.

(7) Educational Programs: learn more about various Islamic educational programs at the AMA.

(8) AMA Counselling Clinic: we are proud to provide a Counselling Clinic at AMA that is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

(9) Neighbourhood Health & Wellness Hub: benefit from the COVID-19 clinic, parenting drop-ins and dental clinic offered by OPH at AMA.

#1a. Ramadan Childcare Position

We are looking to hire a sister for the position of Childcare worker during Ramadan pertains to caring for children during the night time Taraweeh prayers (on Friday and Saturday nights only).

The role is one that we take very seriously as it involves the responsibility of caring for young children whose safety and welfare are entrusted to the worker under AMA.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Supervise and monitor the safety of children at all times
  • Provide a safe and inclusive environment for play and activities
  • Set-up and organize the daycare area each night. This should be completed 45 minutes before the prayer time for Ishaa/Taraweeh
  • Clean up, sanitize and put away all supplies at the end of the evening, once all children have been returned to their parent(s)
  • Maintain a Registration List for drop-off and pick-up of the child(ren), including child’s name, age, any allergies or medical concerns, parent name, and cellphone of both parents at the mosque (to keep on silent and check regularly)
  • Help coordinate youth volunteers and assign them to small groups of children
  • Plan, lead and guide activities, including stories, games, crafts, etc. while ensuring they align with Islamic values and beliefs
  • Create and promote a positive social environment which includes sharing, cooperation, problem-solving, and respect for others in a diverse space
  • Remain professional at all times with regard to children, parents, volunteers and staff

#1b. Ramadan Volunteers

Zayd ibn Khalid reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever helps break the fast of a fasting person, he will have the same reward as him without decreasing anything from the reward of the fasting person.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī 807]

#2. Spiritual and Mental Health in Islam

Join us Saturday March 4th from 6-7pm at the AMA Community Hall for a sessions with sr. Farah Islam on the topic of spirituality and mental health. Take this chance to nurture your mental health with Ramadan right around the corner. 

Farah Islam, PhD, is a mental health advocate, educator, and researcher. She explores mental health and service access in Canada's racialized and immigrant populations using mixed methods research and orients her research and community work around breaking down the barriers of mental health stigma. Dr. Farah joined Yaqeen as a senior fellow and is now the Director of Psychospiritual Studies.

#3. Teen Girls Talk

AMA Big Sisters Club presents, "Teens Girl Talk," a safe space for young Muslimahs ages 13 - 18. Join us for a halaqa this Friday. We will promptly start at 6:00 PM, so please join us on time!

#4. Eating Disorders Workshop

Eating Disorders are serious but treatable mental illnesses that can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, racial and ethnic identity, or socio-economic background. Too many people with an eating disorder are never diagnosed but suffer significant personal and family distress. It's important to destigmatize, so people can take positive actions and get the help they need to make the most of their potential. 

Join us at the "Understanding Eating Disorders," workshop to learn about:
  • What constitutes an eating disorder, their symptoms, and consequences
  • Recognize the factors that may contribute to disordered eating
  • Identify preventative strategies and treatment options for disordered eating
Our speaker is Abeer Mourad, Registered Psychotherapist - Qualifying, who provides psychotherapy to individuals and groups for the treatment of issues relating to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, anger, procrastination, interpersonal relationships, ADHD, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.  She has worked extensively with clients with a history of trauma and is currently also a therapist at the AMA Counselling Centre.

We invite everyone interested in this topic to join us.

#5. La Leche League

La Leche League is back next Thursday to support the pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
 
AMA is proud to offer support for breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women in alliance with the world renowned La Leche League, who offer experience in breastfeeding and are up-to-date on research and current findings dealing with breastfeeding.⁠ ⁠
 
We are now pleased to offer translation services in Arabic, Somali and French, upon request.

La Leche League conducts a series of casual, discussion-style meetings that cover the practical, physical, and psychological aspects of nursing, offering encouragement and suggestions.⁠

#6. Friday Youth Soccer

AMA Youth is back Fridays at 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM with soccer for youth.

#7a. Arabic Halaqa

Join Sh. Ismail Albatnuni for his weekly Arabic halaqa, every Saturday after Isha. The topic of discussion is Major Fitnahs.

#7b. Iqraa Southkeys

Iqraa Southkeys continues to offer Islamic studies and Qur’an recitation in person to our lovely students! Classes are small-scale to encourage students to memorize better. We still have spots remaining. Please contact us or register online.

Islamic Studies: Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM for Islamic Studies and Qur’an memorization, run directly under AMA. The fee for this portion is $225 per student for the full-year. (Taking into consideration the date the student will join).

Location: This year the classes will be held in person at Blossom Park Public School, 3810 Sixth St.

Registration: For the student to ensure a place in class, please send an e-transfer to iqraasouth@amacentre.ca with the Guardian’s name & child’s name included in the note.

#8. AMA Counselling Clinic

To help our community to rebuild and recover from impacts of COVID-19, AMA Centre has launched a Counselling Clinic as part of the Resilient Communities Fund from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). We work with trained Psychotherapists who integrate evidence based interventions (CBT, DBT, EFT, etc) in their client centred therapeutic approach, thus providing top-level care and service to clients. 

We currently offer appointments at select hours on Mondays and Thursdays. To book an appointment, please email counselling@amacentre.ca.

We would like to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support to help us create programs and systems to help our congregants and community to regain autonomy and self-sufficiency.
