Loomis Chamber Recognizes Club
as Nonprofit of the Year

On February 23, the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce presented Soroptimist International Loomis Basin with the Non-Profit of the Year Award. The plaque says: “This award honors the local organization that has made significant contributions to the community and has served Loomis in exceptional ways over a number of years.” Thank you to Rex, Jackie’s husband, for giving the club an amazing introduction at the ceremony.

The club was thrilled that Jenny was also recognized with the “Most Neighborly Native Award.” Congratulations Jenny!
(LtoR) Shari Lynn, Debbie & Jenny

Welcome Debbie
Debbie was inducted into SILB in February. She met both Shari Lynn and Rae while working together at Hewlett Packard (HP). Debbie and Shari Lynn have talked about SILB for years and Debbie knew she wanted to join after her retirement. Debbie grew up in Sunnyvale and started with HP there 45 years ago, and moved to Roseville with HP in 1983.  She then moved on to their spinoff company, Keysight Technologies. Debbie says she’s worked in every department except marketing and ended her career as a program manager.

Debbie was married and has two adult daughters and an 11-year-old granddaughter living in the area. She loves her family time with them. Debbie is a craftsperson and enjoys knitting, crocheting and sewing. She also likes going to wineries for wine tasting.

Club Makes Plans to Support Acres of Hope
The vision of Acres of Hope is to provide a safe family environment and a healthy living program for women with children that sets the foundation of change and breaks the cycle of homelessness. The committee met on March 1 and began planning for the Soroptimist Enrichment Day at Acres of Hope on March 25, 11 am - 3 pm. Presently, there are six families with babies and children under age 12 at the community, and two more families are expected to join them.

When asked how Soroptimist could best support the educational needs of the families, the topics suggested  were: nutrition, etiquette (speaking in groups, conversations with women, body language, working, manners), human trafficking and investing. Knowing these interests, we invited them to attend our Human Trafficking Awareness Workshop. The committee is planning fun ways to cover some of these topics with skits or activities during Enrichment Day. The club will also serve a lunch, play games with the women and children, and give out prizes.

All are welcome to join the committee and/or to come help with the Enrichment Day. Let Rae know, so we can all carpool.

In addition, the club plans to purchase more bark for the playground swing set area. After members tour the facility on March 9, we'll be able to determine how much bark is needed.

Show Your Fashion at Acres of Hope Presentation
At the March 15 program meeting, the club will welcome guest speaker Marnel, who is the executive director of Acres of Hope.  Members are encouraged to show their support by shopping at the Acres of Hope Renew stores prior to the meeting. Spend less than $20 and model your fashion finds or home accessory at the meeting. President Rae promises that there will be prizes awarded by applause. The Renew boutique and home goods stores are located at 1725 Santa Clara Dr., Roseville.

Trafficking Workshop was Well Attended
The Human Trafficking Workshop hosted by the club was held on February 25 at the Loomis Veteran's Hall and was attended by about 80 people, including SNR Governor, Lisa Fitzgerald, and Soroptimist members from other clubs. The speakers gave excellent presentations that engaged the audience and explained both sex trafficking and labor trafficking in our area. Participants commented:

"Thank you for hosting today's event.  It was GREAT!"
"Really, really informative with great speakers. What sad and brutal situations. Thank you for bring attention to this issue."
"The speakers were excellent. Especially glad to learn about Stand Up Placer and the work being done."

Thank you to Becky F. and Elizabeth P. for putting together a very successful educational workshop, and to the members who helped with setup and cleanup.

Save Saturday, April 29 for Dream It Be It
Committee chair Elizabeth announced that the club is resuming the Soroptimist Dream It, Be It (DIBI) -- Career Support for Girls program.  It will be a one-day workshop including a lunchtime panel of individuals who want to share the inspiration, rewards and challenges behind their own career choice. The club anticipates engaging about 16 girls from Confluence High School (co-located on Del Oro HS campus).

"As a Soroptimist signature program, DIBI makes a meaningful impact on adolescent girls and touches the hearts of club members who volunteer," said Elizabeth. "To make this workshop successful, our small committee hopes we can count on many of you to participate in some way." Contact  Elizabeth to let her know how you'd like to participate in the many roles she outlined in her email.

Meet Jackie
In 1998 when her sister-in-law, Sandy, was president of the club, Jackie joined SILB. Sandy encouraged Jackie to join and fill the assistant treasurer position so the club would have the 15 members needed to retain its Charter.

After holding many roles in the Loomis club, Jackie went on to serve as the Sierra Nevada Region (SNR) Governor from 2014-2016. She also served on the Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) Board of Directors from 2019-2021 and as Secretary-Treasurer from 2020-2021. She is presently on the SNR Finance Committee and will be the Treasurer for the 2027 Quadrennial Soroptimist International Convention.

According to Jackie, her favorite part of being in SILB is mentoring other members and helping them to be successful. Jackie said, “Without the members, there is no organization.” She enjoys helping out wherever she can with events.

A forever resident of the local area, Jackie lives on property in Newcastle that her great-grandfather purchased in 1906. She went to Del Oro and her husband, Rex, went to Placer High School. They have one son, Ryan, who is engaged to his fiancée, Heather. Rex retired five years ago and is now a volunteer with Civil Air Patrol which lets him keep up with his love of piloting his plane.

Jackie is the owner of JC Bookkeeping and Financial Services. She started her company five years before opening it in Loomis in 1998. When not working at her business or her volunteer positions with Soroptimist, Jackie likes working outside in her yard and listening to audiobooks.

How SOLT Can Develop Your Leadership Skills

SOLT stands for Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training. The goal is to continually provide training to members to enhance their skills and understanding of Soroptimist methods to achieve our mission. By developing our knowledge, we grow personally and professionally, and can become better leaders in our club, in Soroptimist and in the community.

"SOLT moments" can be brought up at club meetings to provide background for new members and ongoing leadership training is provided through district, regional and international meetings.

A great resource is the archive for past SNR Conferences. Whether you want to learn more about social media, fundraising, financial management, Dream It Be It or other Soroptimist programs, you can find videos and notes in the SNR Archives.
Leadership Summit Held in Auburn

President Rae, Jenny and Stephanie attended the Sierra Nevada Region District 5 Leadership Summit in Auburn on February 11.

According to Rae, the meeting was interactive, informative and fun. “Governor Lisa spoke of various styles of leadership,” said Rae. “Then Linda McDaniels presented on developing your own leadership skills and style.” Past SNR Governor Lane Parks' presentation was on "Negotiation, compromise and disagreeing respectfully."

“We played a fun skit, reading from a script where each of us was assigned a specific personality type,” said Rae.  “There were good examples on how best to stay focused and not let various personality types redirect the activity.  This would be a fun exercise to do in our club.”

As part of the summit, participants shared their clubs' recent successes. The program was summarized by the Sierra Nevada Region District 5 Director, Kathy Dunbar:  "Together, we are empowering ourselves so we can empower, enrich and educate others.
