" Communities living around wetlands could earn more in alternative lives than in rice growing"

Communities living adjacent to limoto wetland are beaming with joy following a bumper fish harvest. The fish is one of the alternative livelihood options given to communities voluntarily leaving wetlands that have been degraded to be restored.

The government established this pilot demonstration site at Limoto wetland under the Building Resilient Communities, Wetland Ecosystems, and Associated Catchment Project being implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), and Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA), with financial support from Green Climate Fund (GCF), Government of Uganda (GOU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
'Limoto wetland users could soon say bye to poverty'
The site emphasizes the need to build the resilience of communities and wetlands ecosystems and Associated catchments. The bountiful harvest is a demonstration that fish farming and other livelihood options can ably replace rice farming which has caused massive destruction of wetlands.

During this season of the harvest, communities have realized shs 60m, which is anticipated to increase as the harvest progresses. Many have, therefore, testified to the high returns from alternatives that have been provided to the local communities whose livelihood is dependent on wetlands.  The government is thus looking to scale up the initiative to other districts.
The Ministry of Water and Environment held several activities in commemoration of World Wetland Day 2023 in a bid to build a critical mass that is responsive to climate change impacts. This year’s event was held in Gweri Sub-County, Soroti district with a call to concrete actions for the sustainable use of wetlands ecosystems
Some of the activities included bicycle racing, exhibitions, radio talk shows, as well as the publication of a newspaper article. The GCF wetland project participated. The event that attracts several stakeholders was thus a good platform for the project to showcase its interventions.
