“Dalat students grow spiritually by showing gratitude.”

The importance of showing gratitude is well-researched and documented. There are countless articles and even detailed studies demonstrating that gratitude has a positive impact on mental health. I’ve linked a few of them here, but a quick online search will bring up many more. Essentially, being grateful is good for you and the only negative I can come up with is that it takes time and intentionality.

Monday was a rough day for me with a lot of challenges, and I had to take a couple of hours out of my day to go to physical therapy. I was not in the best mood, but as I was driving downtown, I decided to practice being grateful. I started listing all of the things for which I was grateful in that moment, which included access to great medical care, a car that works well, medical professionals who care about healing, flexibility to take time out of my day to get treatment, air conditioning in my car... By the time I got that far on my list, my mindset had definitely improved.

There are lots of ways to practice gratitude on a regular basis. Some people write one thing they are thankful for on their calendars each day. Others take the time to write thank you notes regularly. Some families make it a practice to share their gratefulness with one another regularly. This article has a number of suggestions and strategies to get started.

I think the most important thing is to make a conscious decision to be more grateful, then keep reminding ourselves of that. Building gratitude into our daily or weekly habits will enable us to remember to take the time.

The Bible is full of reminders to be thankful or grateful, but here are a few of my favorites.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” I Chronicles 16:34

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” II Corinthians 9:15

Mission Emphasis Week is Almost Here!

선교 강조 주간이 다가왔습니다!     宣教周即将来临

MEW Guest Speakers & Services・선교 강조 주간 초청 강사 및 예배 ・ 宣教周讲员和敬拜安排

Dalat’s annual Missions Emphasis Week (MEW) is just around the corner: Monday-Wednesday, March 13-15. We look forward to gathering as a Dalat family for three days of special chapel services. Our guest speakers this year are a team from Movement Church in Woodstock, Ontario Canada. Movement Church is a dynamic missional church that makes an impact on its community and surrounding area. Guest speakers include their lead pastor Jeff Price; youth pastor, Justyn Schwindt; junior high pastor, Isaiah Belleth; and children’s pastor, Natalie Dickert. Evening services will be 6:30-8 p.m. each evening–with a student-led service Wednesday night.

School-Wide Service Project ・ 학교 차원의 봉사 프로젝트 ・ 全校集体服务项目

As a part of our missional focus during Missions Emphasis Week (MEW), we will help a ministry called Breathe Life, which helps pregnant refugee women. Breathe Life provides birthing help to refugee ladies who would otherwise have little help delivering their babies. During March alone, Breathe Life has 31 scheduled births. During MEW, we are encouraging students to help provide items that these pregnant moms, who have nothing, need to care for their newborns.

Elementary school students are raising money for hospital and birthing fees (each birth costs approximately RM1,120). They are bringing cash and coins to fill baby bottles, and the class that raises the most will win a prize.

Middle school students are hosting a diaper drive. Please help your middle schoolers purchase and bring 60-count (or more) packages of newborn diapers.

High school students are providing these new mothers with fully-stocked diaper bags. Please assist your students in purchasing items like diaper bags, wipes, and other newborn care items from these suggested links. The students organizing this project have picked out items online and put together this list of links with the hopes of creating 31 complete bags. Each fully equipped diaper bag is approximately RM100 - RM150 in total. The students hope to provide enough bags for all 31 births this month.

If families would like to further support Breathe Life directly, donations can be made through bank transfer or online payments. Students will also have an offering box available during the week of MEW. Let’s encourage our students to live generously and help those less fortunate!

Spotlight on the Arts

예술활동에 집중하기     艺术聚焦

Adventures in Surrealism ・ 8학년 초현실주의의 모험 ・ 8年级超现实主义艺术展

“Fantasy Handscapes” was a recent Grade 8 art project in which students developed their observational drawing skills by investigating the theme of ‘hands’, and allowed their imaginations and creativity to run wild. Students spent several periods studying the structures of hands and a variety of hand poses. After this, they were given the freedom to interpret the project title “Fantasy Handscapes” in ways that express their own personal preferences and personalities.

We studied the beginnings of the surrealist movement in art through the work of Salvador Dali. From this inspirational ‘springboard’ we explored a range of possibilities that culminated in a final artwork like the examples below. Students enjoyed the freedom to express their ideas in highly personal and meaningful ways. This “landscapes” project drew together much of the learning, experiences, and skills developed throughout middle school art and is a fitting way to celebrate the transition to further study in high school.

Vision Screenings for Dalat Students

달랏 학생들을 위한 시력검사     Dalat学生视力检查

Vision can affect learning, and good eyesight is essential in helping your child be successful in school. Because of this, we recommend a yearly eye exam.

In the past, Vantage Optometry has come to school and conducted vision screenings for students. This year, they are unable to provide this service at Dalat, but they will continue to offer free vision testing at their eye-care center. We're so grateful for their continued partnership! This eye exam is being offered to Dalat students at no cost. Please make an appointment that is convenient for you. Thank you for making the vision screening of your child a priority.
