Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which lasts for forty days.  During Lent, we prepare our hearts for Holy Week, remembering Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

For those of you who did not grow up Catholic in the U.S. or for those of you just getting to know the Catholic faith, here are a few things to know:

  • Ashes were distributed (placed on every person’s forehead) at Mass this morning for all teachers and students. Both Catholics and non-Catholics are encouraged to receive ashes as a sign of repentance.

  • We do not sing Alleluia at Mass during the forty days of Lent.

  • Catholics practice prayer, almsgiving, and fasting during Lent.

  • One traditional Lenten prayer is the Stations of the Cross which we will begin praying each Friday, with 8th grade students leading the prayer service.

  • Many people will “sacrifice” or “give up” something during Lent

  • Others will do something different each day of Lent rather than give up something...say more prayers, commit to going to daily Mass, etc.

Over the next few weeks our teachers will help Lent come to life for our students in the classrooms.

During Lent, we continue to spend our days learning!  We will soon be finishing the second trimester of electives courses and are looking to begin a new round of electives for our students, during this last trimester of the school year and are currently looking for volunteer teachers for our last trimester of electives.  Volunteers can choose to participate in morning or afternoon sessions and would need to commit to teaching each Thursday for the entirety of the third trimester (10 weeks). If you are interested in learning more about offering your time and talents to our school community in this way, please email Annie Borjas aborjas@holycrosscrusaders.org by Friday, March 3, 2022. For more detailed information and dates, please read this letter.

Queridos Padres y Guardianes,

Our parish and school have been blessed in the past two years by the dedicated ministry of Logan Wishart as our parish director of children’s catechesis and our junior high religion teacher and coordinator of school liturgies... Logan will be moving on from Holy Cross as he pursues a new career path in which he can better utilize the degree and training he received from the University of Notre Dame. We are grateful to Logan for his two years of effective ministry, especially in his revamping of our parish catechesis program to meet the needs of the various age groups.
We are seeking, therefore, a new part-time director of children’s catechesis for the parish… It would be wonderful to find a parishioner who is qualified for this ministry. I invite anyone interested in thisposition (parishioner or other) to contact me at jfenstermaker@hcpsb.org to discuss their interest in the position. Please do so by the end of March. I ask you to keep this job search in your prayer, that the Holy Spirit will guide the right person to this ministry at our parish. Please also remember Logan and his wife Aurelia, a member of our parish pastoral council, in your prayer in this time of transition for Logan as well as for both of them as they await the birth of their first child in early April.
