Girl Recognized with Hanson Rescue Medal

US Sailing’s Safety at Sea Committee awarded a Hanson Rescue Medal and a citation to Alex Fisher, a 13 year-old sailor. Fisher saved the life of her shipmate, who had fallen overboard during a race in 2021. The rescue took place when she was only 12. Alex was crewing for an older male skipper who suffered a life-threatening medical issue resulting in him capsizing their small boat. Alex towed her skipper to shore, swimming while protecting his airway. (He was not wearing a life jacket). When the skipper was safely in the hands of an emergency medical team, she re-rigged their boat and sailed back to the Mission Bay Yacht Club unassisted.

Ms. Fisher distinguished herself as a sailor and as a credit to her family, yacht club and sailing in general. This young woman no doubt has a bright future before her. US Sailing recognized Fisher on Friday, February 16, at the San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs' monthly meeting with the Rescue Medal.
