Letter of Intent

~ SIGNED~
Progress Report on Land Acquisition

We have good news about our property negotiations! Life Plan Humboldt now has a signed “Letter of Intent” with the owner of the Hiller Road property in McKinleyville. The Letter of Intent gives us time to negotiate a final “Purchase Option Agreement” without fear of losing the property.

Almost all the issues have been discussed with the owner and agreed upon. We are finishing our wetlands survey, which was necessary to determine the buildable area of the parcel, and we hope to finalize a Purchase Option Agreement soon.

That agreement will be a solid step forward, ensuring our ability to start the design process and solidify construction plans and financing. Then once we close escrow, building will begin. The path forward will take several years, but we are on our way!

Once the Purchase Option Agreement is signed, we will develop a new timeline and financial projections, and get going on designing and planning the construction of our life plan community.  Stay tuned.

After visiting Humboldt, Ben Butler and Frank Mandy, development directors of Kendal, have offered to start working with Life Plan Humboldt.  Kendal is a nationally known nonprofit organization of communities, programs and services that advocate for and empower older adults to achieve their full potential. There are twelve Kendal communities across the country, including Enso, which will be opening soon in Healdsburg. Kendal is also developing a new community in southern California.

Each Kendal community is considered an “affiliate” of the larger Kendal System. This means that while each affiliate is locally owned, managed and led, residents know their community is part of a strong, best-in-class, values-based system.

Kendal is offering LPH assistance in development, including selecting architects and engineers, planning sustainable development, finance, marketing and community management.

Their expertise blends nicely with Greenbrier, the development consultants we have been working with so far.

At this point we are "dating", meeting regularly, with the possibility of formal affiliation in the future. Kendal has Quaker roots, and values that match well with LPH's values. Working with Kendal would give LPH a national presence, and allow us to learn from like-minded established Communities.

Letter of Support
 Edie Butler

Edie Butler wrote a great letter to Senator Mike McGuire in support of LPH's request for $2.5 million State budget allocation to help us get to the point of getting bonds. She said we could share it and urge others to contact Senator McGuire and Assemblymember Jim Wood.

Dear Senator Mike McGuire,

Housing. Yes, we need more housing in Humboldt County for every age group. We especially need more housing that is designed for senior citizens. We need housing that will suite the needs of aging persons and can accommodate their ever changing needs. Sometimes some of those needs can be met by existing services, friends and family. But what happens when the community loses a major part of those services, such as Home Health? Right now central Humboldt County is facing the loss of Mad River Home Health services, which is/was the best Home Health service in the region. How can a senior with serious medical needs live in her/his own home in the community without Home Health ?

A well planned community such as Life Plan Humboldt can fill both housing needs and see to it that needed medical services are provided. Please work to obtain State funding that will support the development of Life Plan Humboldt. My husband and I truly want to remain in Humboldt County as we age. Having such a community available will make all the difference to us.
Again, please put all your effort into obtaining $2-3 million dollars to help Life Plan Humboldt as it works to build a community for seniors.

Sincerely,
Edith Butler

The last five years of my mother’s life were difficult, both for her and for me. After my father died, I was the adult child helping my mom figure out how to navigate through the unknown process we call aging. I became financial advisor, chauffeur, caregiver, and caretaker of the homestead. I was overwhelmed, even with support from family and friends. I helped Mom move to a senior living community, then to an assisted living village. Each move was fraught with financial and logistical decisions, all wrapped up in emotional distress and fear of the unknown.

My relationship with my mom suffered because my efforts to care for her were often in conflict with her need to remain independent.

Life plan communities encourage independent living, and provide professional guidance, advice, and support in addition to permanent housing throughout the aging experience. I truly believe that my mother and I would have had a more positive and loving journey had my mom been able to live in a place like Life Plan Humboldt.
