BELEM extends open calls to fund song translations

The first open calls from BELEM has been extended to 14 March 2023 to provide more funding opportunities

Paris, France — 27 February 2023 — Creative Europe EU-funded co-operation project, BELEM, has announced an extension to its first series of Open Calls to the music industry. The partnership of music companies has extended the deadline for application for funding from 28 February 2023 by an additional two weeks, with applications now due on 14 March 2023.

The first series of open calls from BELEM to the music industry comprises three parts:

  • Open Call #1: For European Publishers to suggest songs for translations or adaptations
  • Open Call #2: Applications for Publisher-led translation projects (single or multiple songs / repertoires)
  • Open Call #3: Applications from songwriters or translators interested in translating songs into European languages

The extension is to provide more funding opportunities for publishers — up to 60% of the project total, with publishers contributing 40% — to translate or adapt songs that will in turn generate more revenue from their existing repertoire, via new placements or future possible recordings of the translated or adapted songs. At the same time, BELEM is also helping to give more opportunities to songwriters and translators to be paid and hired by publishers to translate songs into another language. The completed and commercially released translated songs will be uploaded to the LyricFind database to track lyric use and ensure payment to songwriters and rights holders. They will also be promoted by music streaming platform Deezer via playlists.

“BELEM’s aim is to break down cultural barriers by making human translations of songs more accessible, and to increase the potential of monetisation for lyrics,” said Florian von Hoyer, COO at MusicHub and BELEM Lead on behalf of Zebralution.“We are very happy to extend our call for the industry to get involved and apply for funding to translate songs and increase revenue potential for their own repertoire, as well as for songwriters and translators to be paid for translating works.”

The BELEM Co-Creation Open Call is now open until Tuesday, 14 March 2023. Music publishers, lyricists, and translators can apply: https://belem.music/open-calls/

About BELEM
The BELEM project, Boosting European Lyrics and their Entrepreneurial Monetization, fosters the licensing, aggregation, distribution, exhibition and translation for meaning. It dramatically increases the monetisation of European lyrics and lyric translations. This significantly boosts the sustainability and exportability of European language songs for music publishers and songwriters, (labels and artists) and benefits the audience, leading to increased language diversity and understanding globally, with translated lyrics crossing (and breaking) borders, both in digital and virtual, as well as live, in-concert, formats. The lyrics and lyric translations for meaning will be distributed globally. Virtual and in-person live shows, alongside lyric videos and lyric translation videos, by European artists, will be produced with subtitles, singing in their native languages, or in a mixture of languages. Songs will be able to be understood by audiences in many languages in any country.
