Special edition: beyond Big Tech – how news publishers approach social platforms

Hello! I’m Anton, a senior editor at The Fix. This is a pilot version of our monthly special newsletter series where I’ll be curating The Fix’s new and archival coverage on one important topic. (If you have any feedback, please drop me a line at anton@thefix.media)

Today, let’s take a look at the variety of different platforms that journalists and publishers use to reach their audiences, especially as Facebook and Twitter have become less reliable partners.

In the wake of what feels like Twitter’s slow demise, LinkedIn emerged as the next preferred option for journalists and media leaders. As The Fix’s David Tvrdon wrote in a deep dive on the topic, LinkedIn’s focus on “connecting the world’s professionals” and features like the ability to grow a newsletter quickly and reliably, make the platform attractive to people seeking to reduce their Twitter usage.

While LinkedIn is the place where individual reporters and media managers have found themselves spending more time on, there’s a much bigger place where audiences can be found – TikTok. Although The New York Times just signed up on the platform, the majority of leading news publishers across many European countries maintain a strong presence there.

The latest ranking of top European publishers on TikTok, compiled by The Fix, shows that, although trailblazers have the upper hand (the two leaders, British tabloid Daily Mail and Spanish digital outlet Ac2ality, are hardly newbies at the top), it’s still possible to get on the bandwagon and build a substantial audience.

Then, there’s a host of other, smaller platforms, such as Twitch or Post – not always worth publishers’ time and money, but potentially interesting to follow and sometimes experiment with. Check out the “From The Fix” section to learn more.
