March 2023

Dear Baltimore Clayworks Community,

March is upon us which means spring is just around the corner and we can look forward to sunnier days ahead.  We have an active calendar this month starting with the American Craft Council 2023 American Craft Made/Baltimore market March 3-5 at the Baltimore Convention Center.   Join us at the ACC Local Craft Partner Pavilion (booth #1023) and enjoy a series of in person demonstrations by four of our studio artists - Shea Kister, Sam Wallace, Vanna Ramirez and Clarissa Pezone - as well as a pop-up exhibition featuring ALL of our Artists-in-Residence.

Baltimore Clayworks will travel to Cincinnati, OH on March 13-18 to attend the annual NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) Conference.  While attending the conference we will participate in the Gallery EXPO representing 25 of our affiliated artists with nearly 1,000 exquisite hand-made utilitarian and sculptural ceramics for sale in addition to. staffing a Resource Hall table (#T65) to promote our four program pillars; Community Arts, Education, Exhibitions and Artist Programs.

As winter classes draw to close I would like to say “thank you” to our Teachers and Students for a fantastic start to 2023. Special thanks to our phenomenal technicians – Mr. Sam Wallace and Jeremy Wallace – without whom our studios and kilns would not produce a bounty of beautiful pottery.  Spring 2023 classes begin March 12 – 24 and we have a limited seats remaining.  We are proud to announce that thanks entirely to donor support we have awarded 10 Hands in Clay scholarships for the spring term!

Last but not least, please take time to visit our three exhibitions - Lunar New Year curated by Adam Chau in the main gallery, Care•ful/less solo by Gerald A. Brown and EARTH and LIFE solo by Wayman Scott - before they close on March 25th!

Always remain curious and creative – thank you,

Matt Hyleck
Executive Director

News

Baltimore Clayworks welcomes new Short Term Resident Artist - Stephanie Kim!

Stephanie Kim is a ceramic artist from San Francisco. She originally studied computer science at UC Berkeley to eventually work full time as a software engineer. Wanting something to do after work, she took her first intro throwing class in 2018 and hasn't stopped working with clay since. Over the years, her work has been in several juried and invitational exhibitions. She now has transitioned to working part time as a Google engineer, in order to pursue ceramic residencies full time. When she's not coding or working in the studio, she can be found at home drawing on bisqueware, while watching reality TV.

March is Youth Art Month!

Community

The VA Maryland Health Care System offers quarterly opportunities for their veterans to engage in connecting to their creativity with Baltimore Clayworks. We are continuously thinking through meaningful ways of curating opportunities that allow our veterans to build skills and have access to the mental health benefits of cultivating an art practice such as self-discovery, stress relief, and self-esteem.

"…really enjoyed going to the clay works in Baltimore to learn and make clay art, it was very relaxing and calming. I would recommend this as something for my mental health regiment because I was frazzled before I got there and I was so refreshed after I left."  BCW Veteran Participant

“…Working with the clay was great for my stiff hands with neuropathy. It was good for mental relaxation. I was not thinking about anything else but that clay. All my other thoughts and worries dropped to the waste side during the activity.” BCW Veteran Participant

“The veterans really enjoyed this hands on activity using touch and verbal cues to compensate for their vision loss. Many verbalized that they really enjoyed this therapeutic activity as it gave them a feeling of success to create... The staff were very involved and provided tactile feedback and step by step instructions and were hands on with the veterans…”   VA Program Lead

EMBARC Fellowship (1 year)

Mary E. Nyburg Fund for Artist Development

The Mary E. Nyburg Fund for Artist Development is an endowment fund begun in 2007 by friends and family of Mary Nyburg. Mary was a respected potter nationally, a crafts advocate, a board member of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, a life-long supporter of Baltimore Clayworks, where she was at one time a Resident Artist. Following Mary’s death in April 2006, a fund was created in her honor to award a stipend each year to allow a period of devoted study that would deepen an artist’s work in clay and also strengthen the Baltimore Clayworks community. The stipend, awarded to one artist annually, helps support travel, study, and/or work in a community outside of Baltimore. Once completed, the artist is required to conduct a presentation or workshop to share their experience with the Baltimore Clayworks community.

Award Amount $1,500

Deadline March 18, 2023 at 5:00 pm

Featured Artist: Jason Piccoli

Jason Piccoli is a native of Colorado and grew up moving between Littleton, Denver and Arvada. He spent his youth devouring sources of science fiction, fantasy, eastern thought, and obsessing about ancient cultures. He practiced painting, drawing, and lived with guitars. He studied Fine Art at Arapahoe Community College earning his Associate’s in Art, where he found his passion for clay and a fondness for the community that surrounded it. He earned his BFA in Ceramics at Metropolitan State University of Denver, and later his MFA in Ceramics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. In graduate school he wanted to explore the idea of bridging the functional, the sculptural, and the painted image. Water etching, underglaze painting, hand-built attachments and stacking wheel thrown porcelain forms are currently explored in his work. Currently, he teaches ceramics at Anne Arundel Community College, and at Baltimore Clayworks, while maintaining a home studio practice.
