The labyrinth will again be open after Church this Sunday, if you wish to walk it as part of your Lenten discipline this year. We had seven walkers last week at the mini-review; two who had never walked it before.

1st Pres has never quite walked the road it finds itself on right now, either. Navigating two pastors leaving within such a short time, reimagining itself and its relationship to the community anew, standing at the crossroads of ministry opportunities in mental health and other guest group use of the campus as a community center for all and still keeping budgets balanced, lights on, and a staff cared for. All at the same time as coming out of a global pandemic, beginning to meet in person in small and large groups for that all-important fellowship that happens when a group of people intentionally choose community.

It is a large set of changes and challenges, opportunities and risks, stewardship and engagement. But I believe you are up to it. In fact, I think you will thrive even more with each step deeper into the community life you share – both internally and externally – to Corvallis and beyond.

Like walking deeper into the labyrinth, eventually the winding path takes you to the center, where listening to God’s Holy Spirit speaking within you guides you to Union and then, to action in the world. Let Lent be a labyrinthine pathway to a deeper union with Christ – and I pray illumination to the deeper realm of God’s implanted word within you.

Resurrection is on its way – but first, the pathway of introspection, illumination, and finally union with who and what you will become as God’s servants in the world.

In the Love of Christ,
Pastor Scott

Daily Lenten Devotional Prompts

Each day of the forty days of Lent, we will be posting a word for sacred focus on our Facebook and Instagram pages. These devotional prompts were first co-developed by a Christian Educator colleague of Pastor Scott's, Becky Mosher, and the Associate Pastor at her church, so you'll see their tag line on the bottom right of each image. We hope that they help you engage in spiritual reflection this season. Feel free to respond in the comments section below each focus word if any poignant message speaks to you. May you draw near to God this Lenten season, even as God continually seeks to draw near to you. [Note: You do NOT need to have a Facebook or Instagram account to see our public devotional posts.]

FINAL WEEK:
February Challenge Offering:

Friendship with Cambodia

A letter from Rick Miller:

(Click here to read the full letter including additional images & contact details.)

History: Friendship with Cambodia (FWC) has had a long history with First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend John Dennis first visited Cambodia in the early 1990s and was shocked by the living conditions in the country. The country had suffered bombing during the Vietnam War, followed by 4-years of genocide, and then 19 years of civil war. When John visited Cambodia there were large numbers of landmines left out across the country. What stood out to him the most was the large number of orphaned children living on the streets, and the number of people, especially children that were maimed by stepping on land mines. In the late 90’s John became one of the directors on the FWC board and our church became a partner helping to support the effort. Several members of our church visited Cambodia, we started supporting them as one of our mission efforts, and our women’s quilting group sent quilts to the orphanage. FWC is a relatively small non-profit Non-Government Organization (NGO) based in Eugene that partners with other NGO’s including our church to support the effort. FWC’s primary philosophy is to:

FWC Focus: Early efforts went towards supporting an orphanage, education programs, hospital, and supplying artificial limbs. Since John’s first visit most of the landmines have been removed around nearby villages and farms, and other humanitarian NGOs have started working in the cities. FWC has shifted focus to the underfunded rural areas with efforts directed towards:

1. Education
2. Women’s self-help programs.
3. Healing shelters for women and girls who were sex-trafficked or raped.
4. Support for orphans, elderly, and AIDs victims.
5. Building a rural hospital and library.
6. Student sponsorship program.

Women's support programs include education, teaching better farming practices, and support in protecting their nearby natural resources they have depended on for generations. Large industries have been coming in and taking adjacent village lands. FWC has helped to acquire small farming equipment to farm and harvest the small farm plots of the rural villagers, where they grow much of their food. The elderly especially need this help.

Judy and I have been involved with the education program in sponsoring students to acquire a university degree. The students, from orphanages and poverty-stricken rural areas are selected by local NGOs. A very high percentage of these students graduate, acquire jobs, and often support another family member to attend a university.

Donated monies go to supporting all these programs. The student sponsorship program connects students to their sponsor or sponsors through personal letters, the students background information, and a photo. Partial sponsorships are $360/yr and full $1500/yr. Your support is very much appreciated.

Delgani String Quartet
Transatlantic Journey
Friday, March 3rd at 7:30pm
in our Sanctuary

Tomas Svoboda’s Tenth Quartet opens the program before German pianist Frank-Immo Zichner joins Delgani for quintets from both sides of the Atlantic. Ernest Bloch's Piano Quintet No. 2, his last work, fills the ensemble with impulsive surges, yearning melodies, and rolling waves of unease. The piece was written at Agate Beach on the Oregon Coast where the composer spent the last 18 years of his life. Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 brims with romantic passion and showcases the composer's Bohemian roots in the dumka and furiant middle movements.
