President’s Message
February 2023

We have now had three of our four summer evening Friday events. The first was in Elephant Park, then Cook Park, with last week’s in Belair. These have been well supported with many new people coming. We apologise for the delays in entering people in the computer system and downloading your results. We have been rather overwhelmed by your enthusiasm. Hopefully, these delays have not put people off. If you can enter each event via Eventor on the Goldseekers website Goldseekers Orienteers (google.com) this can make our life much easier as entries can be readily downloaded from Eventor. Eventor is not a friendly program to use but it is used throughout Australia for all orienteering events.
Thank you for all those who set courses, done the computer work, helped set up and clear away afterwards.
Results from recent events
The results from the 3 events can be found on Eventor. Click on the links to see how you went.

I hope you are pleased with your results. I am delighted to see that nearly everybody completed their courses successfully. Well done! You all deserve a pat on the back. The most important part of orienteering is navigating round the course and finding all the controls. Generally, as you improve your navigation skills, you will be able to go faster. I always feel very satisfied if I can use the map to visualise the route ahead and the control sites. I also enjoy comparing my route with others when I have finished my course.

Next event: This Friday, 24 February
The final summer event will be held in the Clover Hill estate, starting at 6pm on the eastern side of the Brendan Sturgeon Oval, near the railway line. It is best accessed from the southern end of Clergate Road, off Peisley Street. There will be an Easy course of about 2 km and Scatter courses where you find any 15, 20 or 25 controls. When doing a Scatter Course, firstly you have to select the number of controls you plan to visit. There is a time limit of 45 minutes. You then determine which controls you plan to visit and workout your own route. It is a little more challenging than a line course where your course is set for you. The course planner is Phillip Schwebel.

Future program
Moving into autumn, our program from March, will be on Sunday mornings.

12 March: Lake Canobolas.
Starts will be from 10am near the kiosk.  Courses: Short, Medium, Long and Scatter (all controls). This is the first event in our Bush Series that runs from March through to October. The Lake Canobolas map is an example of an easy bush area. With controls placed on mapped features such as tracks, fences, rocks, ditches and buildings. On the Easy course, the routes between controls will be along tracks or other line features on the map. Whereas on the harder courses the best route will generally go across country.

The club AGM will be held at the completion of the event at Lake Canobolas. We are always looking for new people to join the committee so don’t be shy if you have limited orienteering experience. We always welcome the ideas and opinions of newcomers.
2 April:  Bridle Track Reserve
This will be our second bush event. The bush area is on the hill slopes to the north of Clifton Grove. The Start will be at 10 am, on the junction of Ironbark Road and Brumby’s Run.

This is a sample section of the map and below is the map legend. The course shown on the map provides an example of the types of navigation challenges for various course levels.
From the start triangle, the course to control 4 is Easy standard as it follows tracks, initially a very distinct track to control 1, then a smaller track to controls 2 to 4. The brown wiggly lines are contour lines that show the shape of the land, the ridges and the gullies. The colours on the map indicate the vegetation. Yellow for open grass areas, white for bushland that is open under the trees and green indicates thicker vegetation that is not easy to walk through.
The leg from control 4 to 5 is a moderate level of difficulty. It goes over a ridge to a gully, through open forest  Control 4 is in an open area so would not be hard to see when you are near it. Taking a compass bearing from control 4 to 5 would help greatly in following this route. Note that beyond control 5 there is a track, so if you mis the control you should hit the track which will help in finding the control.
The rest of the course is easy as it is back down the distinct track, revisiting control 1 before going on to the Finish.
I hope this does not sound too difficult.  Remember the Easy course will follow tracks all the way. There are always club members who are willing to go with you on your course to help you develop your map reading skills. Although this legend may not be easy to read, try learning the symbols used on orienteering maps.  These are Internationally agreed symbols and are used on all maps.
We look forward to seeing you at our last street event starting on the eastern side of Brendan Sturgeon Oval and then at our first bush event at Lake Canobolas.    Basil Baldwin. President
