Caring for people from a refugee-like background in Qld
Training for GPs 

Delivering refugee health care in a primary health care setting can be a challenge for health practitioners. It can be difficult to quickly access relevant information for primary care practitioners working in the Australian setting. This series of videos developed by experienced general practitioners, provides an informative introduction to refugee health care offering practical information to support the care of people of refugee background in Australia.

TPV and SHEV Visas can apply for permanent visas

The Minister of Immigration made an announcement about boat arriving refugees and permanent visas. 

It applies to those who have ever held a TPV or SHEV visa if that visa has not been cancelled.   

From 14 February 2023, a small number of people will be asked to apply for a permanent visa. Most people will not be able to apply for a permanent visa until late March 2023. 

Refugee and Immigrations Legal Service (RAILS) have uploaded key messages for boat arriving asylum seekers in different languages and will be holding ongoing information sessions.

The CALD COVID-19 Health Engagement Project (CCHEP) in partnership with Centacare FNQ will be Launching the Queensland CALD Communities Engagement Framework and Toolkit. The Framework incorporates shared values and key engagement principles as fundamental guides in engaging CALD communities which is underpinned by learnings from COVID-19 and best practice across Queensland. New Report outlines chronic health conditions among culturally and linguistically diverse Australians 

A new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are identified as a priority population in a number of key Australian Government health strategies.

This report is part of a program of work on the health status of CALD people in Australia and presents data on the prevalence of chronic conditions reported by CALD Australians in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 Census of Population and Housing.

Free Interpreting Service for pharmacies
 
The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care is offering free translation services to help aged care providers communicate with older Australians in their preferred language Read more or request a translation
Pharmacies can use the Free Interpreting Service to access immediate or pre-booked phone interpreting. Immediate phone interpreting is best for unplanned interactions. To access this, simply call 1300 131 450 and follow the prompts.

2.    Restoring Family Links 
For family members who have lost contact/have had no contact with relatives in Türkiye and Syria due to the current situation, the Restoring Family Links team at Australian Red Cross can assess people’s situation and work through the Family Links Network to assist in re-establishing contact with family members. The RFL Hotline    Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (AEST) on 1800 875 199 or via tracing@redcross.org.au

New video in Ukrainian explains about seeing a Specialist 

A new video outlining how to see a Medical Specialist in Queensland has been developed by Queensland Health in partnership with the Refugee Health Network Queensland in Ukrainian. 

It covers information about:

  • What happens after I get referred to a Specialist?
  • What if my condition gets worse?
  • Can I see a Specialist sooner?
  • What if I need surgery?
  • What if I don’t have a Medicare card?
  • What if I need an interpreter?
  • What if I have urgent pain or my health condition gets worse?

Research report
Counting us in: MYAN report on the settlement experiences of LGBTQI+ refugee & asylum seeker young adults

The report on the findings  is intended to provide insights into how LGBTQI+ refugee and asylum seeker young adults (18-30) arriving in Australia are faring in their settlement journey, including good practice and gaps in support.

Talking Racism and Discrimination in Aged Care 
 

The Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care - PICAC alliance is creating a new resource that will provide information and strategies on how to create a cohesive working environment without racism or discrimination.

They would like to hear from people of all backgrounds working in the aged care sector about their experiences with racism and discrimination. The findings from this anonymous survey will contribute to a toolbox to promote cultural safety for workers in the aged care industry.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Carers Qld is organising a Carers Retreat on 7th June 2023 specifically for CALD carers. This will provide CALD carers with the opportunity to have a break from their caring role, prioritise their own wellbeing, and connect with other local carers.

Recruiting Participants for Research to support older Australians from CALD backgrounds 

The University of Queensland has partnered with the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) and the Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast (MCCGC) in successfully obtaining funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project Scheme. The 3-year research project Integrating Community and Family Aged Care for Diverse Australians aims to support older Australians from CALD backgrounds to age well at home and in their communities.

The project is recruiting participants for Study 1 that aims to understand aged care experiences from the perspective of older CALD people through interviews.
