Queen Henrietta the Hornet
If you have problems reading this edition click on "View this email in your browser "at the very top left of the newsletter.
Dear Reader,
Even if you don't like them, it's hard to deny that hornets are impressive creatures. This huge specimen, probably a queen I would guess, was stumbling about in our garden a few days ago. It took no notice of me as I put the camera about four inches away. It was impressively big, about 5cm long, and just sat there and gently throbbed! Eventually it got bored of my company and took off with the sort of noise made by an Apache helicopter and disappeared into the distance.

We had them nesting in our roof a couple of years ago; they are less aggressive than wasps, beneficial in the garden and, in the end, they are just another creature trying to survive, so we decided to leave them alone as long as they didn't bother us; they abided by the unwritten agreement, so it all went smoothly. It was a bit creepy though, putting a light on indoors at night and minutes later seeing the window crawling with hornets, even though it amused us to tap the window at which point they would immediately fall off it!.

I hope you enjoy this edition.

Brundish's Amy Henchoz

Brundish girl Amy Henchoz (National Cross Country Marathon Mountainbike Champion) represented Great Britain  in this year’s 4 Stage Mountain Bike Race in Lanzarote in January.

Follow her progress on Instagram, #amyhenchoz, in her bid to become World Champion as she works towards the event on everyone's cycling calendar - the 2023 UCI CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, in Scotland in August.

Brundish Parish Council is seeking a volunteer to become our footpath warden. If you like walking, keeping fit and enjoy the countryside then being a Footpath Warden is an excellent way to achieve this by ensuring our paths are open to villagers and visitors alike, with all the benefits that brings.

The role is very straightforward, simply requiring someone willing to walk the parish footpaths and report back on any issues found such as problems with bridges, impassable sections, fallen signpost and the like. Any such problems can be reported directly to Suffolk County Council using a smartphone app or an interactive map on their web site, or if preferred they may notified to the Parish Council.

If you are interested in this role please contact Amanda Austin, our parish clerk via
brundishparishclerk@gmail.com

This month we are excited to be offering Pie & Peas again, but with a new and local pie supplier! Freshly hand made to order using locally sourced ingredients they are a treat, a real step up - and we know because we spent an evening testing them, just for you of course! Try one - you won't be disappointed!

*If you do plan to eat with us please let us know in advance, no later than Tuesday, 7th March - it helps us enormously with preparation and is the only way to ensure you get your preferred selection (or indeed, anything at all!).

For pub night food orders or any other enquiries contact us on

Brundish Parish Council Update

Footpaths.

Landowners have responsibilities concerning public footpaths and rights of way that cross their land, they are described on the Suffolk County Council website and include the following:

  • Do not obstruct public rights of way, or allow public rights of way to be obstructed. An obstruction can be anything that prevents convenient use of the route.
  • Ensure that the public are not deterred from using a public right of way, for example verbally or by misleading signs.

After many years of issues concerning accessibility with a couple of footpaths in Brundish we are delighted that some good progress has been made. Following escalation by the Parish Council of these long standing issues to Matthew Hicks our Suffolk County Councillor, footpath 12, a route from near Brundish Church towards The Street has had new bridges and signing installed and the route now runs correctly through previously inaccessible areas. This was achieved in cooperation with the landowners along the route, and we are very grateful for their help as well as to SCC for doing the work. The PC will continue to work on any remaining footpath issues within the parish.

Poet's Corner

The winds of March are wild and strong,
They howl and whistle all day long;
They pull the hats from tall men's heads
And frighten children in their beds.

They brush the trees, they sweep the ground,
I'm glad no seedlings can be found,
For March would hurt each leaf and stem—
But April-time was made for them!

Annette Wynne

Annette Wynne was an American poet. Little is known about her life. Her literary career spanned from 1919 to 1922. She expressed her motivation behind writing children’s poetry:
"The aim of these verses is to please children and others. They were written, and arranged calendar-wise, for school children’s entertainments."

Reverend Enid Pow appointed as Benefice Priest-in-Charge

Enid, previously a missionary priest in Northern Canada, was welcomed by parishioners at Wilby Coronation Hall after her licensing service by the Bishop of Dunwich in Wilby Church on 23rd February. Her appointment is a joint venture between the benefice and Lightwave, Suffolk's fresh expressions church organisation.

Letter from the Clergy

Change and Challenge
We are all very different in the way we experience change or life’s problems.  Some people experience it as exciting and challenging, whereas others are a bit warier, or even plain scared.  All these things are normal and even healthy as long as they don’t overwhelm us.  Coming back to England from Canada has been a very big change for me.  I am excited and happy to be here but know that a lot of things have changed in ten years and that I have a lot to learn (or relearn,) so please be patient with me!
Many of us are facing hard times right now with rising bills and all the stresses that brings with it. It can be all too easy to be overwhelmed and to forget how many blessings we have too.  For instance, I probably didn’t pay much attention to the seasons before I left England, but we do have distinct seasons which is certainly not the case everywhere. Coming to England in the spring has been a real joy for me simply because it is so beautiful with all the signs of new life all around us.  Whereas, spring in Canada is really just a continuation of winter with deep snow and deep freeze temperatures! Sometimes blessings are the simple things like having food to eat today and somewhere safe to sleep, or someone you care about.  It is not really about money or expensive possessions; In fact, they can be part of what causes us stress.

It is actually a very ancient spiritual discipline to count your blessings every day.  It is good for our mental, spiritual and even physical health to remind ourselves of the good things we do have.  When we develop the habit of reminding ourselves of how much good is already in our life, we can begin to deal more effectively with challenges, new things and even problems.
May God bless you with many good things.

News from Brundish Village Hall

Our project to update the kitchen to better equip it for events such as pub nights has been moving along. We have now installed a commercial dishwasher, (it does a complete wash in two minutes) and replaced the range cooker with a commercial model that is much better suited to catering for a crowd. Both systems needed installing electrically and the dishwasher needed to be plumbed in too. On top of that our electrician has provided the new storage shed with lighting and power and we have completed a full electrical safety test of the building and its appliances. Finally, we have replaced our intruder alarm with a new wireless 'smart' system, supplied and fitted by excellent local firm AR Systems; it gives better coverage and is easily remotely monitored and managed. The new alarm system will quickly repay its installation cost by saving on maintenance (no contract required) and by the fact we can now cease the landline used by the previous system.

We were delighted to received support from SCC via our County Councillor, Matthew Hicks, for the electrical work, from MSDC via Julie Flatman our District  councillor for purchasing the new storage shed and also to the National Lottery Community Fund for funding the new kitchen equipment.

My employer asked me to work some extra hours lately, but I don’t appear to have received the extra pay. I asked my boss about it and they said they would look into it, but I don’t seem to be getting anywhere. What should I do?

If you think your pay is wrong, or you haven’t been paid for extra hours worked, the best thing you can do is talk to your employer and find out what’s going on. If you and your employer can’t agree on how much you should have been paid, you can challenge them. You should act quickly though – it’ll be harder to get your money after 3 months from the date the problem arose.

You should start by checking your payslip if you’ve got one. This will help you see how your pay has been worked out. Check things like:

  • Whether you’ve been paid for the number of hours you’ve actually worked
  • If you’ve been paid at the correct rate
  • If you’ve been paid overtime, a commission or a bonus
  • Whether you’ve been paid any sick pay
  • If your employer has deducted any money that you weren’t expecting

Ask your employer to explain anything you don’t understand on your payslip or why you haven’t been paid what you believe you are owed. If you disagree with anything, explain why. If your employer has made a genuine mistake, ask them to pay you the money you’re owed straight away – you should not have to wait until your next pay day.
