New Frontiers of Sanitation on failures

Dear friends and colleagues,

We are delighted to share our new edition of Frontiers of Sanitation, "Learning from and preventing failure in WASH". Thank you to the authors Dani Barrington, Esther Shaylor and Rebecca Sindall from the WASH Failures team.

WASH failures continue to be discussed mostly off the record, with professionals the world over repeating one another’s mistakes.

We need to acknowledge that not everything we try will succeed. But if we learn from one another, we can continuously improve our work.

As always, we welcome your comments and feedback. For any questions or clarifications please contact slh@ids.ac.uk.

Many good wishes,
The Sanitation Learning Hub team

Key recommendations:
  1. Co-design services – from inception!
  2. Allow for experimentation and flexibility
  3. Be transparent in your decisions and accountable in your actions
  4. Take a systems approach
  5. Funders need to drive honest conversations
