I've shared below some professional development opportunities coming up for postdocs, but also two interesting opportunities for feedback from you.
One is an opportunity for you to share feedback with me about the recently proposed changes to SBU's campus parking fees. RF postdocs are not unionized whereas our State postdocs are, so I want to make sure all of your voices are represented in the campus dialogue.
Another is a request from the NIH for feedback on how to "re-imagine" the postdoctoral experience in the biomedical sciences--and they particularly want to hear from postdocs directly.
The short version is that MAPS has proposed to charge fees for all on-campus parking for students, faculty and staff, starting Fall 2023. The initial proposed price structure shared with the faculty/staff union ranges from $120/yr for South P lot to $480/yr for "Core" parking inside Circle road to $600/yr for the garages. There is no proposed distinction between student vs faculty/staff parking.
This proposal has already fostered quite a bit of campus dialogue, and I want to make sure that your voices are heard, particularly those of you who are RF employees and fellows and therefore not represented by a union.
IF YOU HAVE FEEDBACK TO SHARE WITH OPA ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL, I invite you to share that feedback with the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) via this anonymous, four-question survey: https://forms.gle/ox4HuKgfdJkrheUU9
Any feedback you share with OPA will remain anonymous and de-identified and will be shared only for the purpose to ensuring that any issues our postdocs have with these changes are included in the broader campus discussion.
If you prefer, you can additionally or alternatively share your feedback directly with the parking office at parkingchanges@stonybrook.edu
OR if you are a State postdoc represented by UUP, via the UUP feedback form or hybrid townhall on Mar 2.
You'll be receiving a more comprehensive postdoc needs assessment survey in the next month or so, but I wanted to solicit this feedback now given the timely nature of campus dialogue on this issue.

International Women's Day Celebration, Girl Power in STEM: Embrace Equity
Date: Saturday, March 4, 2022, 9:30am - 1:00pm
Venue: Zoom
Girl Power in STEM: “Embrace Equity” is a symposium to celebrate the accomplishments of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Speakers and panelists will discuss the impact of women in STEM careers, on the work environment, and on the economy; how we as a society can improve women participation in STEM fields. Bringing together women from academia, government, and private sectors, this event will also help up-and-coming young professionals learn about women’s experiences in STEM fields. This year we join the International Women’s Day, IWD 2023, community in creating a gender equal world. Speakers and panelists will engage our participants in thought-provoking talks and panels on how we all can seek out inclusion and embrace equity within our own spheres of influence as well as support forging gender equity and women leadership in STEM fields.
This workshop is the second installment in a 3-part series and will focus on communicating how your research and candidacy as an award recipient are aligned with the funder's goals.
