Planting Seeds
I have just started training as a Stephen Ministry Leader. I am looking forward to working closely with this great team. We start each training with a devotion; I really liked the one that was shared this week and thought I would share it with all of you.
1 Corinthians 3:6, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow."
When Paul wrote this first letter to the Corinthians, he was addressing a situation that threatened to tear the church apart. The Christians in Corinth were quarreling among themselves and dividing into factions based on whose teaching and leadership they preferred: Paul’s or Apollos’s. Some Corinthian factions were missing the point: that Christ unites all believers and works through each one’s unique gifts and personality to produce results.
Paul’s words to the Corinthians reveal that he was clear about everyone’s role. He focused on the process of preaching the gospel, but he knew that only God could bring people to faith. Paul did not feel any pressure to make people believe by impressing them with powerful, persuasive words. He summed up this truth in 1 Corinthians 3:6 saying, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” In other words, he focused on what he could do and left for God what only God could do. God brought about marvelous results working through the process Paul diligently carried out.
That’s the way it is for us today. We engage in the process of listening and caring, and trust God to bring about the results. We focus on what we can do, and we leave for God what only God can do. Taking this approach gives us true freedom to engage in ministry, knowing that the ultimate outcome depends not on us but on God.
Blessings,
