Ephesians 5:6-20

REFLECTION
We are now at a special time of year when the darkness of Winter gives way to the light and life of Spring. In today’s scripture, the Apostle Paul vividly uses these dark and light images to instruct us on how to live more fully in God’s will. Some of these teachings seem easy for us to grasp, such as his warning to not be deceived by empty words, but instead, walk as children of the light, and try to understand what is pleasing to the Lord. We can do this, right?

Other parts of this scripture seem more overwhelming for us to act upon, such as staying away from works of darkness, but instead, exposing them to the light. Each day as we watch the news, we get more than just a glimpse at the darkness that surrounds not only us, but our community as well. What can we, as individuals, possibly do to spread Christ’s light into this deep darkness? Perhaps it could start with something as small as inviting a friend to join us at a worship service or spending just a minute or two with a family new to Wesley Freedom to help them feel welcome. Maybe these may feel like simple, small steps, but we are reminded that it only takes a tiny bit of light to begin to break through even the deepest darkness. God’s grace is at work in each of us to provide that light!

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, please help us to live as you have asked us to, being filled with the Spirit, singing and making melody to the Lord in our hearts, and giving thanks always and for everything to God. Please teach us how to be a light to our neighbors each day.
