Join the Dayton Society of Artists this First Friday as we host Erin Smith and her exhibition, HAIRitage: A Cultural Journey & Experience for the month of March. Erin's show will feature new and classic work from her career, as well as collaborations with locally owned businesses and artists.

Join us on Saturday, March 11 from 2 - 4 PM at the Dayton Society of Artists for an Artist Talk with Erin Smith and a discussion about the CROWN Act. CROWN is an acronym for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, and is a law that prohibits the denial of employment and educational opportunities based on hair texture and protective hairstyles such as braids, locs, twists, or bantu knots. Constructive feedback can help take your art to the next level. But when an art school teacher isn’t one hand-raise away, it’s hard to find the critiques you need to grow.

New Call for Art

Inspire(d) is the Dayton Society of Artists’ 2023 annual spring juried exhibition. The call for art is open to all mediums, techniques, and styles. Work is encouraged to, but does not have to fit the theme, inspire(d) (to inspire or be inspired). Any artist, 18 years or older, is eligible to enter. The juror is James Pate and over $1,000 will be awarded in prizes! Please note: all entries will be digitally submitted and juried instead of physically at the gallery.

1st Friday, Mar. 3, from 5-9 and 3rd Sunday, Mar. 19 from 12-4
 
Sarah Wrona is the ARTery Gallery’s visiting artist for March. She is a multi-talented artist who works in glass and with alcohol inks. She also creates jewelry, welded metal sculptures, found object sculptures and crocheted items. Sarah will have a selection of her fused glass dishes, jewelry, and crocheted scarves available at the gallery. 
She is a member of the Dayton Society of Artists where many of her works have been on display. Sarah is also very involved with the Front Street community. You many have seen her art on display at the Dutoit Gallery, the annual Life in the City exhibit, or the outdoor artisan market. She also has a glass studio at Front Street.

News from member Mikee Huber: 

"Green Day" from my Connections Series was accepted into Hit the Hop opening Saturday, 4 March at the Studios on High in the Short North District of Columbus. The reception is Sunday, March 5th from 2-4 p.m.
Mikee will also have a solo show opening March 2nd. 

The Centerville Arts Commission is pleased to announce the Centerville Art Gallery will feature the work of Mikee Huber throughout the month of March. The exhibit may be viewed 24 hours a day at the Centerville Police Department, 155 West Spring Valley Road, Centerville, OH.

Troy Main Street: Local Arts Walk Call

Deadline: Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 12:00 AM Eastern Time 

Description: As part of Troy Main Street’s 2023 Sculptures on the Square event, we are inviting local  artists to submit work to be displayed in downtown business. This will be the third Local Arts Walk held as part of the Sculptures on the Square event. The theme of “Wind And Water” has been selected for the 2023 event. Artists displaying work in downtown businesses do not have to display work themed to “Wind and Water” but are welcome to be inspired by the theme.

Call for Submission details:

The submission process is entirely online. Troy Main Street has developed a Google form submission form. Please have all your information ready, including 1 - 10 images to submit before you begin the application process. Once submitted, you cannot edit your submission. Any changes for your submission can be made via email to Andrea Keller at arts@troymainstreet.org.

Short artist statement (optional but useful)

Olin Art Gallery, Washington & Jefferson College

The Olin Art Gallery on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA, is now accepting exhibition proposals in any medium for the 2023-24 academic year. Proposals may include solo or group exhibitions. Submissions must include: 10-20 digital images (jpg-format), contact information, artist statements for all participating artists, an image list (including title, media, size, and date completed for each work), and a resume or CV. Proposals will be accepted via email only (email should be no larger than 10m - ZIP file, Mac compatible, preferred).


Established and emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Artists receive an honorarium and limited reimbursement to help cover expenses, shipping, travel to campus for installations, artist lectures, workshops, or demonstrations.

There is NO entry fee.

The application must be received by March 15, 2023.

The 30th annual Fleurs de Fete

The 30th annual Fleurs de Fete -- Dayton’s premiere wine and gourmet food festival -- is looking for a Featured Artist! 

The Fleurs de Fête Committee is seeking a local Dayton area artist to donate an original painting that reflects Fleurs de Fête, wine, or springtime at Carillon Historical Park. This image will become the visual theme for the 2023 Fleurs de Fête and will be reproduced in the 2023 event program. Your artwork will be presented to over 1,500 expected guests along with your biography in the program. The original artwork will also be used in our marketing if the piece is completed by early April. 
 
We are seeking a unique and original painting approximately 18” x 20”. Your artwork will be placed in our silent auction or live auction and all proceeds will benefit Dayton History. This is a wonderful opportunity to present your art to a new audience and support Dayton History. This event is consistently rated as one of the best in the Dayton area. Dayton History will provide tickets to the event in exchange for your donation. You will also receive a donation acknowledgement for tax purposes.

Dayton Side Show

Dayton’s greatest FREE, ALL VOLUNTEER two day music and art festival is back again!

This year's event is on Friday, May 19th & Saturday May 20th.
The Application Deadline is April 1st.

Application Guidelines:
It's time to start thinking of what you would like to contribute to this year's Dayton Sideshow. Tell us what you would like to share, show, perform, display, create. We're open to big ideas and we would love to hear them! Applications are now open to bands, musicians, performance artists, visual artists and creative types.

City of Miamisburg Earth Day Recycled Art Show

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: APRIL 10th, 2023


RULES: 
 

-One submission per artist 


-The piece must consist primarily from re-used, re-purposed or recycled items and contain at least 5 pieces of litter found in public parks and spaces.  


-Artist should include a written explanation with their piece that is not to exceed 150 words and should thoroughly explain all recycled elements used. 


-Work must be original. 


-Giclees, copies, reproductions or kit work will not be accepted.  


-Artists are responsible for delivery, set up, pickup & removal of work and any costs associated.  


-A limited number of tables are available to use.   The tables are 3’x3’.   


JUDGING: 


-All entries will be judged and awarded on event day. 


-Judging will take place in three age categories: 12 and under, 13-17, and 18 and up.  


-Entries will be judged on the following aspects; use of recycled materials, overall artistic aesthetic, and the sustainability of the final work (meaning; is this work a lasting and displayable piece of artwork). The combined scores of these three ratings will be used to assign awards 


-Tie scores will be left to the judge’s discretion in awarding 


-Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded  


-Artists are encouraged to attend for in-person acceptance and recognition

The Joy & Whimsy Depot

The Joy & Whimsy Depot is a non-profit art gallery in Lewisburg, Ohio.
They are currently accepting application to show artwork for their spring session, but they also have other calls throughout the year:

Call for Art: Neon Heater

The Neon Heater is a contemporary artist-run space in Findlay, OH with monthly exhibitions featuring a curatorial focus on conceptual and installation based works, contemporary photography and painting trends, and video and new media.

We are currently seeking proposals for solo artist and small group exhibitions exploring contemporary issues such as the climate, the socio-political landscape, geopolitics, speculative futures, retconned pasts, Apocalyptic narratives, fresh starts, and anything in-between that explores, critiques or promotes the present moment.

Call for Art: Landscapes 2023

A juried art exhibition sponsored by the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and Fairborn Art Association. 


Eligibility: Open to artists 16 years and older, and within 200-mile radius of Fairborn, OH. 


Entry Requirements and Procedure: 
-Must be original 2D or 3D work
-Inspired by a scene of Community Park Reserve or Hebble Creek Reserve created in 2022/2023 before June 24, 2023. Work previously shown not eligible. 
-Work may be Oil, Acrylic, Pastel, Watercolor, Print, Drawing, Mixed Media, or Photography. 3D art must be less than 60 lbs. 
-2D work must not exceed 30 x 40 inches. 

Entry Fee: $25 total for up to 3 works

June 24th and 25th - drop off artwork at Fairborn Art Assn. Gallery
July 9th - opening reception - prizes awarded at 2:30 PM. Cash prizes total $300.

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

2023-2024 Montgomery County Special Projects Grant Cycle
 

I wanted to be sure you’d seen the news that the 2023 Montgomery County Special Projects Grant cycle launched this week, and Culture Works is accepting intent to apply forms through March 3, 2023 at 4pm EST.

The Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District (MCACD), with support from the Board of County Commissioners, is providing $300,000 for the 2023 grant cycle, which will be administered by Culture Works. Montgomery County organizations can request grants of up to $10,000 for arts and cultural projects happening between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

Who Can Apply:
The Special Projects Grants program is open to small and mid-sized arts and cultural organizations, other nonprofits, schools, colleges, universities, municipalities, and government agencies that are located in or provide a majority of programming and services in Montgomery County. Coalitions and other unincorporated organizations may also apply in partnership with a nonprofit, tax-exempt fiscal agent. Arts and cultural organizations--and their auxiliary groups--that already receive general operating support from MCACD are not eligible to apply. Read the full program guidelines here.

 

Artist Grant
 

Founded in 2017, Artist Grant is a new venture that aims to support and fund artists. To that end, this charitable organization funds the efforts of artists to continue their important work and contributions to society, providing a modest competitive grant of $500 to one artist every quarter.

Deadline: There are four grant cycles per year – January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15. The deadline for the current grant cycle is January 15, 2023. If you are interested in receiving deadline reminder notifications, please subscribe to their mailing list.

Fee: $25

Award: $500 each grant cycle

Who: Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, stills of video/film, sculpture (of any type of material), ceramics, mixed/multiple media, installation, and other new or alternative media.

Harpo Foundation
 

Established in 2006 by artist Ed Levine to support emerging and under-recognized visual artists. Through grants and residency programs, the Foundation seeks to stimulate creative inquiry and encourage new modes of making and thinking about art.

Deadline: The next grant cycle will open February 2023

Fee: $15

Award: Up to $10,000. The number of awards is determined each year by the annual granting budget.

Who: Self-defined under-recognized visual artist 21 years or older, and must be a United States citizen

Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant
 

Established as part of Lee Krasner’s legacy, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant was set up to support and strengthen the creative lives of artists. A competitive grant for artists with extensive exhibition records, this grant has a long list of impressive alumni. Since its start in 1985, the foundation has granted over 65 million dollars in award money to artists in over 77 countries.

Deadline: Ongoing

Award: Awards range from $5,000 to $30,000, depending on need and circumstance

Who: Mid-career professional artists with demonstrable financial need.  Artists must be actively exhibiting their current work in professional artistic venues, such as gallery and museum spaces; Painters, sculptors, and artists who work on paper, including printmaking. Commercial artists, video artists, performance artists, filmmakers, crafts-makers, and computer artists are not eligible. Students not eligible. Requirements for consideration are the application form, a cover letter, a current resume including an exhibition record, and ten digital images of current work with a corresponding identification list.
