Dear friends,

Tomorrow (February 24) is the one year anniversary of Russia launching its invasion of Ukraine. 2. Announces our new online resource on Common Security - mechanisms to prevent war and address aggression:

  3. Provides a short update on the Peace and Security consultations for the New Agenda for Peace and the UN Summit of the Future: Multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow

World Future Council calls for restoration of peace and international law

"We call on Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine, withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory and enter into negotiations with Ukraine to resolve historical disputes and establish a lasting and just peace that guarantees the security of both nations."

"Regardless of any grievances and unresolved conflicts that Russia may have with Ukraine and the United States/NATO, the use of force to resolve such conflicts is prohibited under Article 2 of the UN Charter."

"We regret that better use was not made of diplomacy, mediation and common security approaches earlier in the conflict to address and resolve historical grievances. Common security mechanisms include the UN Security Council, UN General Assembly, International Court of Justice, UN mediation services, UN Human Rights Council, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and others."

Peace and Security consultations
New Agenda for Peace and UN Summit of the Future

In order to better prevent war and ensure international peace, the UN Secretary General is preparing a New Agenda for Peace in consultation with UN member states and civil society. It will provide guidance and policy recommendations for the Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow, which the UN General Assembly has decided to hold in September 2024, preceded by a preparatory ministerial meeting in September 2023.

UNFOLD ZERO is co-facilitating civil society Consultations on International Peace and Security to feed into the New Agenda for Peace and UN Summit for the Future, including through a Global Futures Forum on March 20-21, and a Civil society Pact for the Future which will be released in April.

Already, approximately 40 proposals from civil society have been submitted on how to better use and improve the existing approaches and mechanisms to prevent war, resolve international conflicts peacefully, facilitate disarmament, uphold international law, and shift some of the massive military budgets ($2.2 trillion globally) to instead support peace, public health, climate protection and sustainable development.

Civil society proposals on international peace and security, as well as proposals on other themes relevant to the UN Summit of the Future, will be discussed at the Global Futures Forum - in New York and online - on March 20-21, 2023. Click the logo above for more information and to register.
Yours sincerely
