2023 Student Programs & Challenges Launch Event

The NEBDHubNational Student Data Corps (NSDC), and COVID Information Commons (CIC) are delighted to invite you to the 2023 Student Programs & Challenges Launch Event on March 31st. This Launch Event will showcase the various programs that the NEBDHub will be hosting in 2023, including the NSDC Data Science Symposium and the CIC Student Paper Challenge.

NSDC 2023 Data Science Symposium
The NEBDHub and National Student Data Corps (NSDC) invite undergraduate, graduate, and recently-graduated students to join the 2023 Data Science Symposium (DSS)! Participants will discover the best practices for academic research, connect with other data science students, and expand their data science knowledge and community. Learn more on the DSS website or by joining the 2023 Launch Event on March 31st! Final submissions due July 31st.
2023 CIC Student Paper Challenge

Join the scientific research community addressing the COVID-19 pandemic! The COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites students from around the world to submit a paper on COVID-19 research for the 2023 CIC Student Paper Challenge. Papers should consider research, trends, or topics that could contribute to COVID recovery, health and scientific insights, and future discoveries. Learn more on the CIC website or by joining the 2023 Launch Event on March 31st! Student submissions due July 31st.

Announcing New NSDC Chapters!
The National Student Data Science (NSDC) is pleased to announce the launch of two new student chapters! Learn more about the Stony Brook University and Dwarkadas Sanghvi College of Engineering chapters and how to join one of the NSDC's 20+ other student chapters on the NSDC website.
January Data Science Career Panel Recap
In January, the NSDC hosted a Data Science Panel to showcase the various educational and professional opportunities in the field of data science. The panel featured three professional data scientists with distinguished backgrounds in their respective fields: Emily Javan (UT Austin); Gianmarco Gabrieli (IBM); and Dr. Kobi Abayomi (Warner Music Group). EI Working Group Meeting
Date: March 15th
Are you interested in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational systems, educators and students? Would you like to collaborate with other researchers and develop ideas to enable a better future? If so, please join us for the COVID Information Commons (CIC)'s next Education Impacts (EI) Working Group meeting on March 15th at 1PM (ET). The group will meet the third Wednesday of each month.

Midwest Big Data Innovation Hub Collaboration Cafe

The Collaboration Cafe is a monthly webinar open to all that is focused on building a community of data science researchers in the Midwest and beyond to explore funding opportunities and develop proposals. We are focused on elevating early-career scholars, particularly from underresourced institutions, but everyone is welcome.

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Webinar Series on 2023-2028 STEM Strategic Plan
Dates: March 15th - 27th
This series of virtual listening sessions will consider the development of the 2023-2028 Federal Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strategic Plan. As part of a robust public engagement plan, OSTP encourages input from all interested parties, including students, teachers, administrators, parents, researchers, employers, and others to provide information and perspectives on the challenges faced by – and within – the STEM ecosystem in the United States and solutions that might be implemented by the U.S. Government.
CIC Student Working Group

COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites students of diverse academic backgrounds and levels of research experience to join the Student Working Group and contribute to the future of pandemic research. Call to Action: Connecting the World for Transboundary Groundwater Resilience
Date: March 20th
This Call to Action event will make progress on the Connecting the World for Transboundary Groundwater Resilience (TGR) UN Water Action Commitment. Presentations on case studies, data analyses, network analyses, and simulation modeling methods will provide a basis for group discussion. Participants are encouraged to share best practices and priorities from their local regions and fields of study. This event will focus on data, systems, networks, and community-based approaches. 
Providing Supplemental Air Quality Monitoring Technology During Wildfires

Date: March 23rd
As part of a federal government response to address the growing threat of wildfires and related smoke impacts that are public health concerns, the Wildfire Smoke Air Monitoring Response Technology (WSMART) program provides air 
monitoring equipment to state, local, and tribal air agencies. This presentation will discuss the challenges of wildfire smoke monitoring, explain the WSMART technology, show real-world examples of use, and share future plans.
Special Seminar Series: Data Leadership
Dates: March 23rd & April 13th
Join The Harvard Data Science Institute during Spring Term 2023 for a series of conversations with McKinsey on digital trust, AI, data governance, ethics, and regulation, featuring industry experts from across sectors like life sciences, NGOs, finance, and more. The March 23rd seminar will focus on data science ethics frameworks. The April 13th seminar will consider digital trust.

The Philosophy of Deep Learning

Date: March 24th - 26th
The conference from Columbia University's Center for Science and Society will explore current issues in AI research from a philosophical perspective, with particular attention to recent work on deep artificial neural networks. The goal is to bring together philosophers and scientists thinking about these systems to gain a better understanding of their capacities, their limitations, and their relationship to human cognition.
Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and
Engineering (CASE) Workshop
Dates: March 26th - 29th
The CASE workshop is an exciting opportunity to learn from science policy and advocacy experts about the role of science in policymaking and the federal policy-making process. The workshop is being held in Washington, D.C. and teaches students about Congress, the federal budget, and science communication during the three-day course.

Trusted CI Webinar Series

The mission of Trusted CI is to lead in the development of an NSF Cybersecurity Ecosystem with the workforce, knowledge, processes, and cyberinfrastructure that enables trustworthy science and NSF’s vision of a nation that is a global leader in research and innovation. This webinar will feature a presentation by Steven Wallace titled "Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS)."
How Data Scientists and Social Scientists Can Work Together to Combat Bias in a Digital World?
Date: March 30th
In this webinar, Dr. Desmond Upton Patton will discuss how data scientists, designers, and engineers can prevent bias in AI by collaborating with social science professionals who can help them become more aware of the unintended harms being built into technologies they develop.
Indigenous Innovation, Data Economies, and AI (IDEAS) Summit
Date: March 31st
AI and ML are touted as the next step improving health, constructing digital systems to innovate new technologies, pioneering creative and artistic expression, and driving data economies. These movements necessitate the equitable inclusion of Indigenous communities to avoid further data erasures and inequities resulting from algorithmic bias. Join the conversation in the IDEAS Summit this March!
SIHO Working Group Meeting
Date: April 3rd
The COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites academics, students, and researchers of all backgrounds who are interested in the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on public health to join Social Impacts & Health Outcomes (SIHO) Working Group. The Working Group meets the first Monday of each month at 1PM (ET). 

Cancer AI Research: Computational Approaches Addressing Imperfect Data

Dates: April 3rd - 4th
The goals of this National Cancer Institute workshop are to (1) examine the state of the science for AI methods designed to operate on noisy, complex, or low-dimensional data, (2) explore how these methods may be applied to key areas of cancer research, and (3) discuss processes for identifying the biological questions that will motivate further advances in machine learning.

Data Sharing and Cyberinfrastructure Working Group
Date: April 7th
The Data Sharing and Cyberinfrastructure Working Group brings together data scientists and cyberinfrastructure professionals. Areas covered include data management and analytics tools and frameworks, and use of data science to solve real world problems in areas such as transportation, water quality, public health, disaster response, and cybersecurity. Working Group meetings are at 1PM (ET). 
PPPR Working Group Meeting
Date: April 14th
Join the Pandemic Prevention & Policy Research (PPPR) Working Group, hosted by the COVID Information Commons (CIC), to discuss forward-looking pandemic and epidemic prevention strategies to benefit humanity. PPPR meetings are held on the second Friday of each month. This month, we will be meeting at 1PM (ET) - visit the Working Group website to learn more!
HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition
Dates: April 17th - 21st
The HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition convenes 40,000+ health information technology professionals to build relationships, learn from experts in hot topic education sessions and discover innovative health tech products to solve their greatest challenges. NEBDHub Executive Director, Florence Hudson, will be presenting an Update on Standard for Clinical Internet of Things on April 18th.
Columbia University Data Science Day 2023
Date: April 19th
Data Science Day provides a forum for innovators in academia, industry, and government to connect. The in-person conference will host keynote presentations from leading voices in data-driven innovation, lightning talks from Columbia University researchers, and interactive posters and technology demonstrations.
UN World Data Forum
Dates: April 24th - 27th
The UN World Data Forum spurs data innovation, nurtures partnerships, mobilizes high-level political and financial support for data, and builds a pathway to better data for sustainable development. The stakeholder community represents a diverse range of governments, civil society, the private sector, philanthropic bodies, international and regional agencies, the geospatial community, the media, and academia. 

10th Annual NJBDA Symposium: Big Data in FinTech

Date: May 9th
The New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA) is an alliance of 18 higher education institutions, as well as industry and government members, that catalyzes collaboration in advanced computing and data analytics research, education and technology.

Paper abstracts for the 10th Annual NJBDA Symposium will be accepted through March 25th on topics including, but not limited to: AI & Finance, Blockchain, Crypto & Digital Currencies, NFTs, and Big Data Business Intelligence.
Bio-IT World 2023 Hackathon

Dates: May 15th - 16th
Bio-IT World is proud to bring together innovative data scientists and developers from across the industry to solve real-world data challenges using the principles of Open Source & FAIR Data. In 2023, the fifth annual Bio-IT Hackathon will continue in the tradition of uniting life science and IT teams to tackle actual bioinformatics projects with maximum impact potential. 

Cyberinfrastructure for Research Data Management Workshop
Dates: May 23rd - 24th
Princeton University, Edge, Globus, and EPOC (TACC and ESnet co-PIs) are hosting the Cyberinfrastructure for Research Data Management workshop. The in-person workshop is designed to help research computing professionals deploy next-gen cyberinfrastructure that can effectively support data-intensive science. 
Workshop on Data for Good for Education (D4G4ED)
Dates: June 2nd - 3rd
The Workshop on Data for Good for Education will be a professional development opportunity for all instructors seeking to more deeply engage their students through meaningful social good projects within a classroom setting. It will inspire, educate, and most importantly, allow faculty the chance to share, and prepare, materials for use within their own teaching context.
Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability in Economics and Social Sciences Sessions
Dates: Through July 2023
Cornell University's Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability in Economics and the Social Sciences is a series of virtual and in-person panels on the topics of reproducibility, replicability, and transparency in the social sciences. Sessions will be held through summer 2023 - join the next discussion in late March!
Professional Opportunities
RFI: Existing Data Sharing Processes for NIH-Funded Research
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is interested in understanding the processes for storage, preservation, and sharing of scientific data generated by NIH-funded cancer research at academic, research, and medical institutions in order to develop guidance on scientific data management.
Responses due by April 3rd.
Next Generation of Indigenous Coders: STEM+CS and Career Readiness Course
This project aims to increase the number of Indigenous students in the technology and engineering fields, in academia and professionally. The Next Generation of Indigenous Coders project is a new collaboration between the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) and Comcast NBCUniversal. Formally known as "Native Coders," AISES is excited to expand the initiative, which started with three schools on the Navajo Nation Reservation, by offering the STEM+CS and Career Readiness Course to four additional schools for the 2023-2024 year!
Submissions deadline is April 10th.
NIH FOA: Accelerating Data and Metadata Standards in the Environmental Health Sciences
This FOA supports projects that enable Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) communities to openly develop, extend, adapt, or refine data and metadata standards. This initiative will catalyze community-driven standards development and the standards, software, best practices, or other tools developed should be broadly disseminated for adoption by the relevant. 
LOIs due April 10th.
Big Data Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP)
BD-STEP is a two-year fellowship opportunity managed jointly by the National Cancer Institute and the Veterans Health Administration that uses data science to improve outcomes for cancer patients. BD-STEP graduates gain diverse skillsets needed in healthcare data science careers.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through August 31st.

NEBDHub and the NSDC Announce Blockchain in Healthcare Today and Telehealth and Medicine Today Calls for Manuscripts

In collaboration with Blockchain in Healthcare Today (BHTY) and Telehealth and Medicine Today (THMT), the NEBDHub and the National Student Data Corps invite data science enthusiasts, graduate students, educators, and researchers to respond to a new Call for Manuscripts (CFM) focused on data science and blockchain for healthcare.

Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry & Government
PEPI-G supports data faculty, research scientist, postdoc, graduate, and undergraduate work on high level problems for the federal government. PEPI-G provides awards to defray housing, transportation, and other costs associated with trips to engage with industry or government partners to launch new collaborations and research projects.
Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

COVID Information Commons PI Survey

The CIC invites all NSF and NIH PIs who have received COVID-19 related funding to update the public information about their award via a voluntary survey. All updates will be reflected in the CIC PI Database.
