2023 Student Programs & Challenges Launch Event

The Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBDHub), National Student Data Corps (NSDC), and COVID Information Commons (CIC) are delighted to invite you to the 2023 Student Programs & Challenges Launch Event. This Launch Event will showcase the various programs and challenges that the NEBDHub will be hosting in 2023, including collaborative research opportunities and professional development opportunities.

2023 CIC Student Paper Challenge

Join the scientific research community addressing the COVID-19 pandemic! The COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites students from higher education institutions around the world to leverage the resources available from the CIC to synthesize a paper for the 2023 CIC Student Paper Challenge. Papers should consider research, trends, or topics that could contribute to COVID recovery, health and scientific insights, future discoveries, and innovations.

Announcing New NSDC Chapters!
The National Student Data Science (NSDC) is pleased to announce the launch of two new student chapters! Learn more about the Stony Brook University and Dwarkadas Sanghvi College of Engineering chapters and how to join one of the NSDC's 20+ other student chapters on the NSDC website.
January Data Science Career Panel Recap
In January, the NSDC hosted a Data Science Panel to showcase the various educational and professional opportunities in the field of data science. The panel featured three professional data scientists with distinguished backgrounds in their respective fields: Emily Javan (UT Austin); Gianmarco Gabrieli (IBM); and Dr. Kobi Abayomi (Warner Music Group). Sustainability Now! Action-Oriented Solutions for
Food Systems, Nutrition, and Diet
Dates: March 8th - 10th
The Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy presents the Tufts Nutrition Data Symposium (TNDS). This symposium establishes a necessary forum where students, researchers, academics, and young professionals can share, discuss, and explore diverse opinions, experiences, and expertise on emerging topics in the fields of nutrition and public health sciences.
NYC Open Data Week
Dates: March 11th - 18th
Open Data Week is an annual festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Team at the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI)BetaNYC and Data Through Design.
EI Working Group Meeting
Date: March 15th
Members of the Education Impacts (EI) Working Group, supported by the COVID Information Commons (CIC), meet the third Wednesday of each month at 1PM (ET) to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic's long-term impact on educational systems. Learn more by visiting the EI Working Group webpage
CIC Student Working Group
Date: March 17th
The 
COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites students of diverse academic backgrounds and levels of research experience to join the Student Working Group and contribute to the future of pandemic research. Join the listserv for news and updates, meet other members on the CIC Slack Channel, and find the recurring meeting link on the CIC website! 
Catalyzing Advocacy in Science & Engineering (CASE) Workshop
Dates: March 26th - 29th
The CASE workshop is an exciting opportunity to learn from science policy and advocacy experts about the role of science in policymaking and the federal policy-making process. The workshop is being held in Washington, D.C. and teaches students about Congress, the federal budget, and science communication during the three-day course.

A Lesson Plan Workshop
Date: March 27th
Interested in building data science into your algebra class, but unsure where to start? Join the Data Science for Everyone Coalition for a lesson plan showcase from data science and math content creators as they walk you through what data science can look like in your classroom with practical guidance and how-to advice.
Indigenous Innovation, Data Economies, and AI (IDEAS) Summit
Date: March 31st
AI and ML are touted as the next step improving health, constructing digital systems to innovate new technologies, pioneering creative and artistic expression, and driving data economies. These movements necessitate the equitable inclusion of Indigenous communities to avoid further data erasures and inequities resulting from algorithmic bias. Join the conversation in the IDEAS Summit this March!
Data for Good Seminar: Patrick McDaniel, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Date: April 27th
Columbia University's Data for Good Seminars invite leading academics from around the world to share how they are using data to address societal challenges. This seminar features guest speaker Patrick McDaniel, Tsun-Ming Shih Professor of Computer Sciences in the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a fellow of IEEE, ACM, and the AAAS.
Bio-IT World 2023 Hackathon

Dates: May 15th - 16th
Bio-IT World is proud to bring together innovative data scientists and developers from across the industry to solve real-world data challenges using the principles of Open Source & FAIR Data. In 2023, the fifth annual Bio-IT Hackathon will continue in the tradition of uniting life science and IT teams to tackle actual bioinformatics projects with maximum impact potential.

NEBDHub and the NSDC Announce Blockchain in Healthcare Today and Telehealth in Medicine Today Calls for Manuscripts

In collaboration with Blockchain in Healthcare Today (BHTY) and Telehealth in Medicine Today (THMT), the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub and the National Student Data Corps invite data science enthusiasts, graduate students, educators, and researchers to respond to a new Call for Manuscripts (CFM) focused on data science and blockchain for healthcare.

Program to Empower Partnerships with Industry & Government
PEPI-G supports data faculty, research scientist, postdoc, graduate, and undergraduate work on high level problems for the federal government. PEPI-G provides awards to defray housing, transportation, and other costs associated with trips to engage with industry or government partners to launch new collaborations and research projects.
Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
