February Events Recap

In the month of February, we hosted two new and unique special events! We were so glad to see so many of you out and about at Setsubun and Finding Her Beat—but if you couldn't make it, don't worry, we now have a recap of each event on our YouTube channel! Click the thumbnails or links below to watch now, and don't forget to subscribe to catch our new videos as they come out.

Finding Her Beat

February 18, 2023

On February 18, we celebrated boundary-breaking contributions to Taiko drumming in a full day of events inspired by the documentary Finding Her Beat! We excitedly co-presented a special film screening and Q&A in collaboration with DOXA and SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs, and a community talkback with the Vancouver Taiko Society. First on the agenda, however, was a public performance by Sawagi Taiko in Woodward's Atrium! We were struck by powerful drumbeats resonating through this unique space. Be sure to check out our quick recap video in case you couldn't make it in person.

Setsubun

February 5, 2023

Earlier, on February 5, we celebrated Setsubun in Oppenheimer Park with a Sacred Fire, community meal, Taiko, Paueru Mashup community dance, and mamemaki. It was a lively event to brighten up a grey day, and we were thrilled to bring so many people from across Vancouver to Paueru Gai. While it may not feel like spring in Vancouver this week, we hope watching our recap of the event will help bring the vibes of a new season to come.

You may have noticed some bags being handed out during Setsubun, as that weekend we concluded our Winter Care Package program by distributing 250 packages full of snacks, cold weather essentials, and hygiene products to unhoused and precariously housed people living in the Downtown Eastside and Paueru Gai. These care packages were directly funded from our winter fundraiser, and we have YOU to thank for donating, spreading the word, and/or volunteering. Thank you to all who supported!
