Journey of the Universe Newsletter

February 2023

Journey of the Universe took a recent tour across Central America! Project Manager Sam King traveled through Guatemala and Costa Rica to offer a series of film screenings in English and Spanish.

The first screening took place at Proyecto Poporopo, an innovative restaurant and art gallery in Guatemala City. An avid group of local artists and scholars converged for the screening and engaged in a wide-ranging discussion of cosmology, spirituality, and sustainability that spanned well into the night.

The next film screening took place in San José at La Universidad Técnica Nacional, the largest public technical university in Costa Rica. The event marked the launch of a new interdisciplinary Humanities program for undergraduates focused on environmental ethics. Following the film screening, an auditorium full of students and faculty engaged in a cross-cultural discussion about the fusion of science and spirituality in birthing a global environmental ethic for our time. We are grateful to Silvia Arrieta for the generous invitation!

The tour was capped off by a film screening, meditation, and discussion with Earth Charter International at the University for Peace in El Rodeo, Costa Rica. A diverse group of Master’s students reflected on the the film and its implications for their work in international peace studies. Thanks to Mirian Villela for arranging the screening and to Alicia Jimenez and Amanda Bennett for their warm welcome!
