Cold Blues
Oil on Canvas | 44 x 32 inches

"Sometimes it's good to get a little lost," shares Rick Stevens from his Santa Fe studio. "Sometimes I'm forcing myself to do something where I don't know where it's going. It's a dance between wanting to have enough mastery to know how to do something successfully, and not becoming formulaic, not becoming attached to an element of a painting. It all has to work as one, like an organism – we're not hand plus foot plus head – we're a functioning whole. And a painting has to have that sort of life, too, where it lives as a whole organism."

Dear friend of AKG,

The cold blues of the season take us to the cold of the weather, and yet these artists are exploring the landscape as a whole, from light to dark and dusk to dawn, from the quiet to the chattering of Stellar Jays outside the window to an aspen grove as a connected living organism. Which work brings you joy amidst the cold of winter or the cold of night?

Warm regards,

Drypoint, Monoprint and Monotype | 36 x 48 inches

"The Visitors commemorates – and exaggerates – a scene which I have often witnessed outside my kitchen window: the gathering of Stellar's Jays up in the trees. In essence, each bird is an individual painting, as monotypes do not have a matrix to just ink up over and over. They are individually painted for each of the 20 editioned prints. There are 14 birds in this piece, so 14 x 20 = 280 drypoint monoprint, monotype birds."

"The idea of animals existing with humans nearby has always been a strong theme in my work. These are all little imaginary peeks at forest life at dusk or during the night. They were inspired by photos taken by my “Trail Cam” of animals walking into and out of a small wooded environment very near my home. A few turn around to see who’s there; light may catch their eyes, but they are relaxed and calm, simply going about their lives with the Colorado moon lighting their way as they leave tracks in the snow as evidence of their coming and going."
